<p>I can't take anyone seriously that says get armor enchantments. They are ALL Trash with downsides that limit, annoy, or downright CRIPPLE you. </p><p>
</p><p>That said, yeah. Upgrading armor more than your weapon is a smarter choice, but there is one really good catch. </p><p>Enemies that berserk, such as the gnoll berserker or warrior or whatever. Your lol damage will get him to berserking range and then a strong attack can still break through your armor - maybe even quite badly.. or enemies with high armor\HP. Some of them ignore your armor (Skeletons death explosion does, maybe evil eyes too? Not sure) </p>

<p>An easy solution to that would be to kite them (<i>preferrably to a door</i>) once they've entered the Enraged threshold; their buff will be reduced to nothing by the 100% Surprise Attack amp you get from striking them as they open the door.  Hmh : j </p>

<p>Hello. I've gotten the Amulet of Yendor 15 times and ascended (fought my way to the surface) twice. I have beaten the game with all classes. </p><p>The plus of your weapon and armor matter more than enchantments on your weapon and armor. Using a stylus to upgrade your armor is a terrible strategy, most of the enhancements are actually more like curses. Anyone who says "You just need more potions of healing" with that type of armor is a moron. Potions of healing are like extra lives, you NEVER want to use one unless absolutely neccesary. Unless you have 4 or 5 stylus, you will actually be cursing your armor. If your armor is above plus 3, you can use a stylus and if it's something bad, just upgrade your armor again and you have a 60% chance of it reverting back to normal. It's not likely you will find 4 or 5 styluses in the game, I usually find 2 or 3 and just sell them all. </p><p>Armor is more important than weapon in general, the weapon enhancement becomes more important (as some noted) in the later game. Spiders can poison you if they hang around long enough, you want to bash them before this happens. Monks disarm you, so you want to smash them quickly as well. Warlocks shoot death rays and armor can't stop it. You need big meaty hits vs. bosses and remember your enhancements on weapons are also "to hit" . Very important on bosses. People are complaining about the DM because you need a more upgraded weapon to fight him. Armor doesn't help as much because he's gassing you and he has good armor. You need a meaty weapon by then. Generally you don't want to upgrade a weapon or armor that you won't beat the game with. You want to save your scrolls of upgrade for the following weapons: Longsword, BattleAxe, Warhammer, or Glaive. Any of these is fine to beat the game with and if you can avoid upgrading any weapons until you find one of these. If you find a better weapon later, sell it and continue upgrading the weapon until it's +5. +5 is fine to beat the game. </p><p>DON'T hold out for plate male with scrolls of upgrade. Scale mail is just fine to beat the game with. Scale Mail +7 is fine. I've beaten most of my games with scale mail, and it's more common than plate mail, meaing you have a better chance at using the blacksmith on it. There are only 5 types of armor, when completing the ghost quest you should ALMOST ALWAYS chose the armor. You have a 2/5 chance of getting plate mail or scale mail which is very important. If you talk to the ghost and you already have upgraded chainmail or scale or plate, that's the only instance I would consider opting for the weapon.  </p><p>I recently beat the game with a normal sword (not longsword) +7, the reason I went with it was because when I found it it's plus was already at +3, and I already had another normal sword. In this way I was able to use my scrolls of upgrade more agressively on armor (Scale mail +8) and upgrade my ring of evasion (to +4). That game was a breeze. </p><p>In general, you should upgrade armor first and weapon second, and upgrade a top level weapon or armor before anything else. Some people like to save their scrolls for too long. This can be stupid. If you step on a fire trap: goodbye scrolls. I love getting the scroll case above all other bags for this reason. You can also drop your scrolls at the stairs when you enter a new level and explore the level without them (keeping them safe). This is time consuming but it can be game winning. (be careful it's not a level where thieves operate).  </p><p>Sometimes you may be forced to use scrolls of upgrade early to beat goo (say to get chainmail to plus 2 so you can wear it).  </p><p>People also tend to think you need to have the exact required strength to use a weapon or armor. THis is false. You need to be just within one point of it. Using it slows you a bit, increases food consumption a bit, and increases your miss chance a bit, but it's usually worth it. If I have normal leather and scale mail +2 and my strength is 12, you can bet your ass I'm going to put on the scale mail even though I'm still one point away from the strength requirement for the scale mail. Figure this factor in when deciding to use scrolls of upgrade. </p><p>If you are in a position where your scrolls are safe and you are doing great against monsters DON'T USE SCROLLS OF UPGRADE. You should save them for when you find more powerful items. You are under no pressure to use them yet, and the more stuff you discover the more useful your scrolls of upgrade are going to be.  </p><p>If you are losing 1/5 of your health every time you fight an enemy and have scolls of upgrade saved, you are playing the game wrong, losing your potions of healing, and you're going to fail. The goal is to get in a situation where you are beating the monsters with little or no hp loss, so you can save your dew vial and potions of healing for the final boss. Using evasive tactics on monsters to explore the dungeon (ring of shadows, wands) so that you can find great weapons to upgrade is a workable strategy if you haven't found scale or one of the weapons I mentioned. </p><p>Hope this helped! </p>

<p>Weapon is better to upgrade than armor because when I had a +13 Plate Armor I was still taking a lot of damage. </p>

<p>Nice armor! But I guess you already know it's a simplistic logic? ;) </p><p>I prefer weapon on armor, because I think I could finish the game with a cloth armor +0, but not with a dagger +0. (Altough... it could be a nice challenge? :D)  It's what you show here: the "all in armor" is not really working, as you will still take damage: poison, fire, beholder, big hits... You need to make damage, so you need a decent weapon or wand. (And an decent armor helps too.) </p><p>Anyway, a good armor can be really helpful. And it's a very good point of the game: any item can be nice! If you upgrade more armor than weapon, it's ok. If you upgrade only weapon or wand, it's ok. If you upgrade only rings, it's ok. There is really different wining strategies, so the game is fun! </p><p>

<p>look i just read all this discussion and found out many stuff that i did not knew yet,some stuff that makes absolutly no sense so i decided to put my experience in as i have beaten the game only a few times (and i mean few not more than 12 times) so i will say the strategy i use for most ocasions
</p><p>(i will mostly priorize armor exept for a few classes) </p><p>warrior: </p><p>i will focus in mlee combat (for real mr obvious?) </p><p>gladiator: </p><p>as soon as i get a plate+1 or a scale + 2 upgrade it until plate+6 scale+7 use your weightstone in a battle axe or war hammer (i even rather battle axe than glaive) for accuracy then put all you get into weapon </p><p>then focus on weapons solely(i do not upgrade rings or wands with the gladiator at all) </p><p>berzerker: </p><p>mostly the same as gladiator but i put one more SoU in the armor and swich the wightstone for speed and use a longsword or glaive and you should be just fine </p><p>(of course 'i go a litle bit crazy some times and go a little bit outta control with my rhimes'(EMNEM words)you can see a pic of my last compuer run down there) </p><p>mage: </p><p>this oscilles a lot depending on witch subclass i take </p><p>battlemage: </p><p>plate+3 or scale+4 will do fine put all you've got on a decent battle wand such as firebolt/lighting/avalanche and obviouslly equip your wand as mlee but most of your damage will come from the spell of the wand </p><p>warlock: </p><p>actually i do not spend anything on wands at all i only put the same thing as beszerker onto this </p><p>(for rings,i will only upgrade a ring of power if i find one) </p><p>rougue(finally i will speak about the real class of this game): </p><p>i do not use assassin much so there may be flaws </p><p>freerunner(i use this the most): </p><p>i usually get a plate armor +4 or scale +5 and use a hit-and-run style for most fights(exept bosses that all are easily beaten with a seed of earthroot)then put all on a measly knucleduster or mace with weightstone for speed then we're good to go of course when using the freerunner you should farm drops a lot as it will be far easier to kill those flies while chasing down those thieves easily just be allways non-starving and you're good to run </p><p>(a ring of haste/evasion really shines here the pic down there shows it) </p><p>assassin(as i said i am not really experienced with this beast): </p><p>this class does much like freerunner for me but you will need a one-hit-one-kill weapon like a galive or a longsword with an speed weightstone to make this shine or something a paralisis weapon or keep luring enemies into doors will make good use of this class ,hit sleeping enemies with an projectile weapon will also be a great asset here </p><p>(i guess that a ring of shadows does really great with this) </p><p>huntress(i dont really like using this as they hp is too low for begining but after you pass floor 10 or something,boy this lady shines): </p><p>sniper: </p><p>best for her as sniper is to upgrade the boomerang a lot with an decent armor for this weak-starting-health melee weapons will not shine that much here i would even ignore them most times </p><p>(not much from wands or rings here you see) </p><p>warden: </p><p>a good mlee weapon and +6 plate will do fine of course a ring of herbalism+wand of regrowth(and a wand of firebolt to kill enimies from afar)will ork out like miracles here the barkskin is a GREAT asset for her despite her low health (to help before the goo)     i will prefer a glaive with speed wightstone here if you find a wand of regrowth or ring of herbalism (or both)take'em +3 </p><p>well i guess that's,it i hope it helps </p><p>note that these pics are both from my emulated computer not cellphone and both caught the amulet of yendor it was freerunner(evasion+8)and berzerker(scale+11) as you can see are the easiest way to get rid of those baddies </p>

<p>I haven't beaten PD yet, out of like 100+ games, but today I made it to level 19 with a Warlock. I had a +9 plate armor, and a +2 vampiric spear. I thought the armor would make me damn near invincible but fire elementals, golems and monk eventually got me. Well what actually got me was the glyph of stench on my +9 plate. Died from the poison gas. </p>
