Shattered Pixel Dungeon has a wide variety of items, both consumables and equipment. Items are created upon level generation, given by an NPC or dropped by a creature upon defeat. Creatures other than the Hero generally can't use them besides some specific cases (e.i. Animated Statue wielding a weapon).

When lying on the floor, item heaps can be teleported by Teleportation/Warping/Disarming traps or fall if caught in Pitfall Trap AoE. They are also destroyed by explosions, although progression items, upgraded items and class items will survive. Any item which falls ends up on a random tile on the floor below the current one, although potions and honeypots will shatter on impact.

Some specific items also interact with the elements:

  • Fire destroys scrolls, detonates bombs, and turns mystery meat into grilled meat.
  • Frost shatters potions, extinguishes bombs, and turns mystery meat into frozen carpacio.
  • Electricity recharges wands.

Item Containers[]

Some items generated inside in the dungeon are found inside a container which must be searched. This is done by clicking/tapping the interact prompt while next to them on automatically by trying to walk into them. That said, heaps don't actually block movement and the Hero will walk right through when pathfinding to a tile behind them. All containers prevent items inside from being teleported and locked containers prevent items inside from falling when caught in Pitfall Trap AoE.

Skeletal Remains[]

SkeletalRemains
Skeletal Remains
This is all that's left of some unfortunate adventurer. Maybe it's worth checking for any valuables.

Items generated in standard rooms have a 5 % chance to be contained in skeletal remains. The remains also appear in a pit room and mass grave room. If remains generated with a cursed item inside, looting them spawns a wraith on top of it. This lets the player know if an item found inside it is cursed or not. If the Hero is standing on top of the remains, the Wraith doesn't spawn, but the Hero instead takes damage equal to 50 %HP.

Hero's Remains[]

Hero remains
Hero's Remains
This is all that's left from one of your predecessors. Maybe it's worth checking for any valuables.

Hero's remains contain a single item dropped by the most recently deceased Hero. This can be any equipped item, an item from quickslot, or item from inventory except for unique and progression items or a gold pile. They always generate on a floor where the most recent death took place if the Hero was eligible to drop remains. You can't find find remains during daily runs.

Items found inside remains will be altered in the following way:

  • Equipment has its level capped to +3 (+0 for artifacts) and is always cursed, although the curse doesn't override enchantments allowing for both to be present.
  • Any artifact is rerolled if you already encountered it during the current run or replaced with gold if you already encountered all artifacts.
  • Stackable items have stack size randomly reduced.
  • Gold piles contains a random portion of gold obtained by the deceased hero, but not less than 50.
  • If you play a seeded run or any run with challenges enabled, the original content is replaced with 10 gold.

Hero's Grave[]

No name: Here lies a nameless <hero>.
Name: Here lies <name> the <hero>.

They leave their possessions in this world, as they pass on to the next. In hopes that another hero may avoid their grisly fate.

Available in Google Play version as a Silver Support (5$ tier donation) reward and in Steam version and App Store by default. It replaces the hero's remains, but the difference is purely cosmetic.

The gravestone has an epitaf depending on how many enemies you defeated and how far have you progressed in the dungeon:

  • An esteemed puncher of rats, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A skilled crusher of crabs, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A terror to the explosive undead, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A hunter of crazed thieves, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A clipper of bat wings, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A crusher of gnoll helmets, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • Experienced with fighting dwarven warriors, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A destroyer of dwarven inventions, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • A legendary demon hunter, they defeated N enemies before perishing.
  • Challenger of a demon god, they defeated N enemies before perishing.

An additional epitaf can appear if you die with a Potion of Healing or full Waterskin in your inventory:

  • A shame that in the throes of death they forgot to drink from their waterskin.
  • A shame that in the throes of death they forgot to drink a Potion of Healing.

Tomb[]

Tomb
This ancient tomb may contain something useful, but its owner will most certainly object to checking.

Tombs containin loot appear in crypt rooms and grave rooms. Looting a tomb spawns 4 Wraiths next the Hero in cardinal directions unless the positions are occupied.

Chest[]

Chest
You won't know what's inside until you open it!

Items generated in standard rooms have a 25% chance to be stored in a chest. Certain special and hidden rooms have loot stored in chests as well. This is usually to prevent the player from examining the loot until he reaches it and from pulling it with Telekinetic Grab.

A chest has usually a 25% chance to be a Mimic, but the odds differ in certain rooms.

Gold chest[]

Locked Chest
You won't know what's inside until you open it! But to open it you need a golden key.

Equipment generated in standard rooms have a chance scaling with a number of upgrades to be stored in locked chest. This forces a golden key to generate on the same floor. Locked chests appear in a "4 chests" hidden room as well, which also contains the respective keys.

A locked chest has a 10% chance to be a Golden Mimic, unless it generated in a hidden room.

Crystal chest[]

Crystal chest
You can see an artifact/a ring/a wand inside, but to open the chest you need a crystal key.

Items generated in crystal vault are contained in crystal chests. The player can inspect the chest, to determine the type of the item, but no further information. This is important because there is only one key on the same floor, forcing the player to pick which chest to open.

There is a 10% chance that one of the crystal chests in the room will be a Crystal Mimic.

Progression Items[]

The term "progression items" refers to consumables which permanently enpower the Hero or their equipment. As they are very powerful and important (although technically not necessary) to beat the game, they generate in a set quantity and it's impossible to get more through farming. They also can't be passes onto another run through the Hero's remains. The following items are considered progression items:

  • Potions of Strength permanently increase Hero's strength stat, allowing them to equip stronger items. These can also be turned into their exotic counterpart which decreases a strength requirement of a specific item or into an elixir which increases maximum health as well.
  • Scrolls of Upgrade permanently increase level of a chosen equipment items (except for artifacts). Their exotic counterpart and runestones crafted from them instead apply enchantments onto weapons and armor.
  • Tengu's Mask lets the Hero choose a subclass and access tier 3 talents.
  • Dwarf King's Crown lets transforms Hero's armor into class armor, granting them a chosen armor ability and access to tier 4 talents.

These items are generally indestructible, although Potions of Strength still shatter falling upon being thrown. It's worth noting that there are other items which permanently strenghten the Hero (e.i. Potion of Experience) or upgrade items (e.i. Arcane Resin) which are not considered progression items.
