In Shattered Pixel Dungeon, wands have been changed to be identified on sight due to each wand having a unique sprite, but the number of charges are no longer auto-identified when they've all been expended. The wand will still identify itself after a sufficient amount of use. The amount of maximum charges and how many said charges are used can vary from one wand type to another; Magic Missile gets 1 extra charge (2 extra when it's imbued on Mage's Staff, by default), while wands of regrowth and transfusion start with 1 maximum charge less. All other wands have maximum 2 charges when not upgraded.

Wand recharge rate[]

Wand recharge rates have been adjusted to scale based on how many charges are missing, recharging faster the more charges need to regained.

Battle wands[]

These wands' primary purpose is to deal damage to their targets.

Magic Missile[]

This fairly plain wand launches missiles of pure magical energy. While the wand itself lacks any special effects, it has more available charges and can briefly empower other wands when upgraded.

Each bolt from this wand deals 2-8 damage, and will briefly empower other wands if upgraded.

The mage's starting weapon courtesy of its initial presence in the staff, this wand is the best performing +0 offensive wand thanks to its 1 additional charge. However, its +1/+2 scaling lets it down as soon as it gets upgraded.

The wand has an additional effect, though. After zapping it, it will empower other wands to be the same level as it for 4 turns, though the empowerment only applies to one zap. This mechanic makes investing in the wand much more interesting, though only certain wands really benefit from Magic Charge and the wand of magic missile still needs to be zapped to activate it.

Wands that use multiple charges benefit much less from Magic Charge, as while it will increase other wands' levels, it will not increase their charges.

Lightning[]

This wand is made out of solid metal, making it surprisingly heavy. Two prongs curve together at the tip, and electricity arcs between them.

This wand sends powerful lightning arcing through whatever it is shot at, dealing 5-10 damage. This electricity can bounce between many nearby foes, spreading damage between them. The lightning and damage spread much more effectively in water. If you're too close, you may get shocked as well!

When the initial target is standing on land, all hostile mobs adjacent to any mob struck by the chain (including the original target) to the target struck are also dealt damage; however, they will all take reduced damage. When the initial target is standing in water, however, it will spread to enemies within two tiles to an enemy in the chain (including the first) and deal full damage to all of them.

It should be noted, however, that the electricity can spread to the hero as well if the hero is adjacent to an affected mob. When this occurs, the hero will take 1/2 of the wand's damage roll.

    • This gives the wand of lightning the most raw, straightforward damage of all wands, especially when its base damage of 5-10, which is the highest of all wands, is taken into account.

Disintegration[]

This wand is made from a solid smooth chunk of obsidian, with a deep purple light running up its side, ending at the tip. It glows with destructive energy, waiting to shoot forward.

This wand shoots a beam that pierces any obstacle, and will go farther the more it is upgraded. The beam deals 2-8 damage, and will also deal bonus damage for each enemy and wall it penetrates.


When zapped, this wand fires a beam which deals 2-8 damage gaining +1/+4 damage with each upgrade. Unlike most wand attacks, this wand's beam is only limited by its own maximum range of 2(level+3). However, it pierces creatures and solid terrain and for each creature or every three solid blocks pierced by the beam, the wand deals an extra 1-4 damage to all enemies pierced. Walls pierced after the last enemy are not counted.

The beam doesn't stop at the targetted tile, but always travels to its maximum range. This makes it possible to hit unseen creatures behind its original target and possibly damage creatures you didn't want to harm (especially at high levels). Animated statues and crystal mimics inside locked rooms are ignored by the beam.

Any flammable terrain the beam passes through is instantly destroyed without actually starting a fire. While this can be useful for destroying barriers and libraries, it also makes tall grass useless as cover. Thankfuly, this is mostly ofset by being able to shoot through walls.

Mind vision potions work extremely well with this wand due to the wand's ability to shoot through walls, especially when highly leveled. So does Huntress's Heightend Senses and Mage's Arcane Vision talent. Evil Eyes are resistant to this wand, causing them to only take half of the damage.

Fireblast[]

This wand is made from red-lacquered wood with golden leaf used liberally to make it look quite regal. It crackles and hisses at the tip, eager to unleash its powerful magic.

This wand produces a blast of fire when used, extending out into a cone shape. As this wand is upgraded it will consume more charges, the effect becomes significantly more powerful the more charges are consumed.

Whenever the wand is cast, it will use up 30% of the charges, rounded up.

Damage formula:

  • 1-2 damage at +1/+2 scaling
  • 2-8 damage at +2/+4 scaling
  • 3-18 damage at +3/+6 scaling.

Additional effect: burning with cripple or paralysis on target

  • 1 charge expended = Damage only, 5-tile radius AoE
  • 2 charges expended = Cripple (4 turns), 7-tile radius AoE
  • 3 charges expended = Paralysis (4 turns), 9-tile radius AoE

The spread of the wand can be a blessing as well as a curse, allowing multiple targets to be hit, but also making it difficult to control around flammable tiles and objects. This spread follows the rules:

  • A tile which can not be entered can not be set directly on fire by the wand, this includes barricades and bookshelves. So it is suggested to step a few tiles back (at least 2) if you want to set the mentioned blockages on fire, which will be indirectly be flamed.
  • The fire can go through doors as well as opening them. This can be used to damage large number of enemies without instantly revealing your location.
  • The 8-tile surrounding the hero's position CAN be set on fire if it is flammable, so it is needed to check the surroundings before using the wand to prevent unnecessary damage.
  • Wand of Fireblast can trickshot along the center of its cone. This can be used to attack wandering enemies while still remaining stealthy.

The wand of fireblast has received a huge damage nerf when compared with its predecessor. Even a full-powered shot has only 56 the max damage of a Wand of Firebolt, but uses up 3 charges to the 1 charge of firebolt. The large potential damage loss is offset to some degree by the status effects inflicted by fireblast.

Corrosion[]

This wand has an ashen body which opens to a brilliant orange gem.

This wand shoots a bolt which explodes into a cloud of highly corrosive gas at a target location. Anything caught inside this cloud will take continual damage, increasing with time.


  • This wand spawns a cloud of corrosive gas damaging enemies over time for several turns. Unlike many other wands, bolts zapped from this wand will hit precisely the targeted tile, allowing the user to set up clouds along the enemy's path like traps.
    • The volume (affecting its size and time it takes for the gas to dissipate) of the cloud is equal to 50 + 10 * level.
  • Damage formula: level+2 damage per turn, dealing 1 increased damage per turn
    • A +3 wand would deal 5 damage on the first turn, 6 on second, 7 on third etc. until the debuff ends (shortly after the enemy leaves the cloud).
  • The user can be damaged by the cloud and debuff as well.
  • The damage ends when the target leaves the cloud of corrosion, or it dissipates.
  • Much like the Wand of Blast Wave, this wand exerts "pressure" where it hits. While it's not enough to push enemies around, it will trigger traps, allowing the user to clear some of the more dangerous impediments, especially explosive traps that tend to destroy items if they are used to trigger them.
  • Battlemage melee effect: Applies Caustic Ooze debuff for 20 turns.

Utility wands[]

In contrast to offensive wands, these wands are often lacking in damage and instead make up for it in other ways. When zapped, they apply various secondary effects. They are better when paired with other items to bring out their potential.

Blast Wave[]

This wand is made of a sort of marbled stone, with gold trim and a round black gem at the tip. It feels very weighty in your hand.

This wand shoots a bolt which violently detonates at a target location. There is no smoke and fire, but the force of this blast is enough to knock even the biggest of foes around.

Similarly to the wand of corrosion, the magical bolt from a wand of blast wave will detonate at the targeted location, allowing the Hero to control how and where to a target is knocked back. The blast knocks back the character caught in the center of the blast 3+level tiles while dealing 1+level to 3+3×level damage to them. However, it will also affect everyone in a 3x3 radius of the blast, dealing the damage to them as well as knocking them away from the blast with halved effectiveness. The Hero and their allies cannot be damaged directly from the blast, but will be knocked back without taking any damage (unless they hit a wall).

It is important to remember that bosses take halved knockback, rounded down.

  • The knockback will push the enemy 3+level tiles away from the blast. If the enemy hits a wall or door, it will take some damage and be paralyzed briefly (see above table). The damage is inflicted prior to paralysis and thus cannot prematurely break it.
  • The Hero/ can be blasted back as well if it is used at point blank, but if the Hero and the enemy don't have a wall behind them, it's a quick way to distance between the Hero and the enemy.
  • This is very useful when paired with wands of lightning and corrosion, giving welcome spacing that can be easily exploited by the powerful wands.
  • Much like the Wand of Telekinesis that it replaces, the wand of blast wave can chasm kill enemies on chasm levels and areas with pits against grounded enemies, at the cost of half the EXP reward. However, the Hero can also be accidentally knocked into the chasm and receives tremendous damage.
  • The blast can open doors and activate traps.
  • Battlemage melee effect: Elastic enchantment.

Warding[]

Rather than directly damaging an enemy, this wand will summon stationary wards and sentries. Note that wards cannot be placed next to each other, and this wand can only sustain 3 energy worth of wards at a time.

Zapping an unoccupied tile will summon a lesser ward. Zapping wards will "upgrade" them, causing them to improve in quality as described below without actually increasing their zap damage. It is possible to zap through enemies and even walls with the wand. Any zap on an invalid target tile (occupied by an enemy or a wall) will place a ward next to the spot.

Zaps from wards and sentries deal 1-8 damage with +1/+4 damage scaling from wand upgrades. Wards and sentries will only shoot a turn after they were originally summoned.

Wards cost 1 energy to create and promote.

Wards all have one HP and are unable to dodge attacks. Thus, any attack will kill a ward. Upgrading a ward will add two additional shots to it before it despawns as well as boost its range. All wards attack once every two turns.

This sentry has the same firepower as a ward, but has health instead of a set number of charges. It resembles the gem at the tip of your wand of warding. Each zap from this sentry will deal X-Y damage.

Zapping this sentry with your wand of warding will upgrade and heal it.
This sentry will spend some health each time it zaps an enemy, but can be healed by using your wand of warding on it.

All sentries zap one time per turn. In addition, sentries, unlike wards, can dodge attacks. Their evasion is identical to the hero's before modifiers. Zapping a sentry with a wand of warding will heal them for the appropriate amount shown above before upgrading them if possible. When promoting a greater ward into a lesser sentry, the lesser sentry will start out with 4 less HP for every zap the lesser ward did. Upgrading a ward will scale its HP, so if a lesser sentry had 20 HP (out of 30 HT) after it would have been healed, it will become a sentry with 32 HP (out of 48 HT).

  • Battlemage melee effect: Heals all deployed Sentries on the current floor.

Frost[]

Wand of Frost
This wand seems to be made out of some kind of magical ice. It grows brighter towards its rounded tip. It feels very cold when held, but somehow your hand stays warm.

This wand shoots blasts of icy energy toward your foes, dealing 2-8 damage and chilling, which reduces speed. The effect seems stronger in water. Chilled and frozen enemies take less damage from this wand, as they are already cold.

This wand causes the target to become chilled for 2+level turns (4+level if the target is on top of a water tile), slowing their speed of attack and movement. If used upon a target that is already chilled, the target will take reduced damage, but the chill that would have been inflicted by the wand will simply be added to the existing chilled duration. The wand is ineffective against frozen targets.

The wand's mechanic of dealing less damage to chilled targets somewhat hinders its offensive potential, which would otherwise be comparable with the wand of lightning; without this mechanic, the wand of frost's base 1-8 damage and +1/+5 scaling would quickly make it better offensively than basically every wand in the game barring the wand of lightning. Regardless, a spammed wand of Frost will have similar damage output to a non-boosted wand of Prismatic Light, which is still usable. The limitation can be alleviated with the use of fire from a Wand of Fireblast, though the gimmicks of both wands are wasted this way.

The bolt from a wand of frost can freeze potions on the ground and freeze mystery meat into frozen carpaccio.

Battlemage melee effect: freeze target, requires the target to already be afflicted with at least 10 turns of chill.

Prismatic Light[]

This wand is made of a solid piece of translucent crystal, like a long chunk of smooth glass. It becomes clear towards the tip, where you can see colorful lights dancing around inside it.

This wand shoots rays of light which cut through the darkness of the dungeon, revealing hidden areas and traps. The beam can blind enemies, and deals 1-5 damage. Demonic and undead foes will burn in the bright light of the wand, taking bonus damage.

  • Damage scaling: +1/+3
  • Damage increased against demonic and undead enemies by 30%.
    • King of Dwarves, dwarven ghoul, dwarf warlock, dwarf monk, senior warlock
    • All Demon halls enemies.
  • Any tile within a radius of two tiles from the beam will have its true nature revealed, revealing traps and hidden doors as well as potentially showing undiscovered floor tiles on the other side of a wall and helping discover secret rooms.
  • The blinded debuff is incredibly potent for many classes, allowing for a surprise attack, and also for effectively shutting down the frustrating and deadly ranged attacks of enemies.
  • Prismatic light is a decent candidate for imbuing onto a Battlemage's staff due to its two useful debuffs, with the blinded debuff allowing the user to attack ranged enemies without fear of retaliation and the crippled debuff allowing him to gain some temporary spacing from melee-based enemies. However, it only cripples on hit, reducing synergy somewhat.

Living Earth[]

This wand is made from a curious rock, with bands of glowing yellow energy. The rocks seem to shift slightly as you grip the wand, as if they can feel your hand.

This wand sends bolts of magical rock at enemies, dealing 4-6 damage. The rocks will then re-form around the user, granting them armor in proportion to the damage dealt. If enough armor is built, it will form into a rock guardian when the wand is next zapped.

When dealing damage, the equivalent of damage dealt will be applied to the caster in the form of rock armor, which absorbs half the damage that would be taken from physical attacks. The wand's damage scales by +0/+2 with upgrades.

Magical rocks are surrounding your body, when you are attacked they will attempt to block for you, and will reduce the damage you take by 50%. Each damage blocked scrapes away some of the rock however.

If enough rock is built around you, the next zap from your wand of living earth will cause the rocks to form up into a guardian which will fight with you.

When enough rock armor has been built up (5*(2 + wandLevel) armor), casting the wand will summon an earthen guardian ally that will attack the nearest foe at the cost of all of the rock armor on the hero. While it is active, casting the wand will heal the guardian instead of giving the player rock armor.

The rocks from your wand of living earth have formed into a protective earthen guardian! This rocky protector will attack nearby enemies, which will force them to attack the guardian instead of you. When all nearby threats are gone, the guardian will re-form around you, and will return when you next use your wand.

The guardian's defensive power is tied to the level of your wand. It currently blocks X-Y damage.

Hits from the guardian will cause enemies to begin attacking them, even if they were focused on attacking something else before.

If the guardian loses its target and cannot find a new one within a turn, it will despawn and the hero will gain rock armor equal to the amount of HP it had when it despawned.

  • The Battlemage melee effect: Grant the user rock armor when hitting enemies, or heal the earthen guardian, should one be deployed.

Corruption[]

This wand radiates chaotic dark energy, if that weren't already obvious from the small decorative skull shaped onto its tip.

This wand will release a blast of corrupting energy which will debuff enemies and eventually bend them to your will. Enemies are able to resist the corruption, but weakened enemies are much easier to corrupt than healthy ones.

This wand attempts to "corrupt" an enemy and turn it into an allied unit, succeeding if the power of the wand exceeds the enemy's ability to resist it.

  • Wand power = 3 + level2
  • Enemy resistance = (1 + EXP)[1+4(Current HPHealth Total)²]

Each minor debuff afflicting the target multiplies its resistance to corruption by 34, while each major debuff halves resistance:

If at this point the wand's power exceeds the enemy's modified resistance to corruption:

  • The enemy will gain the corrupted debuff.
  • Its HP will be fully restored.
  • All debuffs except Soul Mark will be removed from it.
  • It will drop its item. (if applicable)

Following this:

  • The enemy will lose 1200 of their health every turn.
  • It will act as an ally, attacking and getting attacked by enemies. This means that it can have its health restored with Transfusion, and you will be able to switch places with it by tapping on it.
  • If the enemy is immune to corruption, they will instead be afflicted by the doomed status, which doubles all damage done against them and never wears off.

However, if the enemy successfully resists the wand, the wand will instead apply a debuff based upon how close it got: minor when it wasn't close, and major when it was.

Necromancy[]

When paired with corpse dust (from the Old Wandmaker's quest), it is possible to do what is popularly referred to as a "Necromancer" build among experienced players. Corpse dust will quickly raise wraiths, and an adequately upgraded wand (exact level required shown below) will always corrupt wraiths. Doing this will quickly result in an army of loyal wraiths that will proceed to easily clear each floor and overwhelm Tengu and King of Dwarves thanks to their innate high evasion. Each corrupted wraith will last 100 turns before disappearing thanks to their 1 HP. This build can also work with a cursed Dried Rose, although its slower spawnrate makes it inferior to Corpse Dust.

Corruption Battlemages in particular excel in this situation due to having access to recharging their staff in a pinch from melee attacks. In addition, the staff effect is good at redirecting an enemy away from you and toward an evasive wraith or even another enemy, all without using any charges.

Regrowth[]

This wand is made from a thin shaft of expertly carved wood. Somehow it is still alive and vibrant, bright green like a young tree's core.
When used, this wand will consume all its charges to blast magical regrowth energy outward in a cone. This magic will cause grass, roots, and rare plants to spring to life.

When life ceases new life always begins to grow... The eternal cycle always remains!

This wand spends 30% of its charges, rounded up, to spread blobs of regrowth along a conic path, akin to the wand of fireblast. Each blob can soul mark, and roots characters for 4 turns per charge used.

The golden lotus is a mystical plant that can only be conjured by a powerful wand of regrowth. Its aura enhances all plants and plant effects, but it burns through its energy and dies after a short time.

This lotus was produced by a +X wand of regrowth. All plants in its effect will instantly trigger if they are planted on a character. Plants will also have a Y% chance to drop their seed, and tipped darts gain Z% extra durability.

The golden lotus is immune to all external sources of damage, but loses 1 HP every turn.

The wand of regrowth will lose effectiveness as it is used, in order to prevent farming with the wand at low levels. A degraded wand will only spawn furrowed grass (similar to the one created by walking through tall grass as Huntress), which will not drop additional dew or seeds, and it may fail to spawn plants at 2/3 charges. Upgrading the wand will allow the wand to use more charges before it begins losing effectiveness; however, upgrading the wand does not reset the degradation. The wand will also last longer at higher hero levels. After +10, this mechanic is effectively removed from the wand.

  • Battlemage melee effect: When the hero is standing on grass, gives herbal healing based on damage dealt.

Transfusion[]

A fairly plainly shaped wand, it stands out due to its magenta hue and pitch black gem at the tip.

This wand will sap some of your life energy and blast it at a target. This effect is very versatile: allies will be healed or shielded, enemies will be temporarily charmed, and hostile undead will take considerable damage.

When targeting another character:

  1. If the target is an ally or is charmed, the wand will damage the user for 5% of their max HP, and the target will be healed for 10% of the user's max HP, plus an additional 3 HP per level of the wand. Any excess healing will be given to that character as shielding that decreases by 1 per turn.
  2. If the target is not an ally or is charmed, it grants some shielding to the Hero (5 + wand level).
  3. If the character is an enemy and is also undead, they will be damaged for a reduced amount of the aforementioned amount.
  4. Otherwise, they will be charmed for 5 turns.
  • Battlemage melee effect: when hitting a charmed enemy, gain 2(5+wand level) shield, and your next zap on an ally will not consume any health.
