[This wiki page describes the recently released version "0.9.4 Testers' Party - The Start". No significant change has been made in this version in the plants and seeds of SPS-PD, with the only change being the renaming of the Nut Plant to Nut Vine in the directly previous version "Year Hunter".]

Overview[]

All seeds are found by trampling high grass or occasionally as separate loot, and heroes should throw or plant a seed on the floor to produce the associated plant, exactly like in Sprouted PD. Also like in Sprouted PD seeds can be planted, brewed into their associated potions, or cooked with a Blandfruit. Nevertheless, there are some significant additions made in the use of plants and seeds in SPS-PD in comparison to Sprouted PD:

  • The Ammo class of items is added, which are almost all crafted by the combination of a stone ore piece and a different seed each (for the specific ammo recipes visit their Alchemy page).
  • The Build bomb, which is the basic ingredient for all the new craftable bombs of SPS-PD, is crafted by a a stone ore piece, a scroll and any seed, and also almost all special bomb types need two seeds for their crafting (for a list of all the SPS-PD bombs visit their Alchemy page).
  • In the many Cooking recipes that have been added in SPS-PD, any seed in general or a specific seed in particular is an ingeredient for 15 of them (for all the cooking recipes visit their Alchemy page).
  • The Dreamfoil, Starflower and Sungrass plant when trampled now also drop an edible item with very similar effect to the plants (for details see below)
  • The Phase Pitcher and Upgrade Eater plant don't transmute/transform items by throwing the items into them anymore, but instead drop an item with this function (for details see below)
  • The Seed Pod plant, which is borrowed from Shattered PD, and also the totally new Nut Vine plant have been added (for details see below)
  • The spawning of Blandfruit, Phase Pitcher and Upgrade Eater plants has become much more common, as randomly one of them always spawns inside a room with a well, and the hero can farm them by visiting repeatedly the Wisdom Trial depth, which spawns more than 10 of these rooms in each new depth generation.

Plants & Seeds[]

All the seeds have as a first part of their game description: "Throw this seed to the place you want to grow a plant.", while the second part which follows is common for the seed and the plant. For the effects of each potion you can visit the relevant Alchemy page.

Blandfruit[]

Shattered fadeleaf
SPD Blandfruit Bush

"Distant cousin of the Rotberry, the pear-shaped produce of the Blandfruit bush tastes like caked dust. The fruit is gross and unsubstantial but isn't poisonous. perhaps it could be cooked." Stepping on this plant will produce always a Blandfruit fruit and also a random common berry, unlike Sprouted PD. It is not associated with any potion, so it will always brew potions randomly and cooking it with a blandfruit will result in a still unkooked blandfruit (don't cook the seed or brew potions with it). For its different recipes visit the relevant Alchemy page. Due to the plant now spawning randomly inside well rooms it is much more common than in Sprouted PD (wells are anyway much more common in the regular dungeon of SPS-PD, but a Blandfruit/Phase Pitcher/Upgrade Eater plant will spawn in each well room of the revisitable Wisdom Trial depth, no matter if the well is active or not)..

Blindweed[]

SproutedPD blind seed
SproutedPD blindweed

"Upon being touched a Blindweed perishes in a bright flash of light. The flash is strong enough to disorient for several seconds." Any character stepping on the plant will get both the Blinded and Crippled debuffs for 5-10 turns.

Brewing seeds of Blindweed is likely to yield a potion of Invisibility, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Blindfruit, which has the same effect as the potion.

Dewcatcher[]

SproutedPD dew seed
SproutedPD dewcatcher

"Dewcatchers camouflage as grass to avoid attention, but their bulges of collected dew give them away." Stepping on a Dewcatcher plant will spawn multiple drops of colored dew in the tiles immediately surrounding it. Yellow drops are worth 2 dew, red are worth 5, and violet are worth 50. It is often possible to trigger the same plant multiple times before its power fades. It is advisable to pick up and use violet drops before stepping on the plant again, as otherwise they may stack and be wasted.

Brewing Dewcatcher seeds is likely to yield a potion of Life, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Heartfruit, which has the same effect as the potion.

Dreamfoil[]

SproutedPD dream seed
SproutedPD dreamfoil

"The Dreamfoil's prickly flowers contain a chemical which is known for its properties as a strong neutralizing agent. Most weaker creatures are overwhelmed and knocked unconscious, which gives the plant its namesake." Enemies stepping on the plant will fall asleep (unless immune), and will remain so until disturbed. If the hero steps on it, he/she will be cured of many debuffs (Bleeding, Crippled, Drowsy, Poisoned, Slowed, Vertigo, Weakness).

Dream Leaf SPS-PD
Dream Leaf
A common vegetable by dreamfoil

This plant has been moderately changed in SPS-PD as trampling it now also drops a Dream Leaf edible item, with very low nutritional value, 20, but which cures also many debuffs, while two of them are not cured by stepping on the Dreeamfoil plant (Armor Break, Attack Down, Bleeding, Crippled, Poisoned, Weakness, but not Drowsy, Slowed and Vertigo).

Brewing seeds of Dreamfoil is likely to yield a Potion of Purification, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Dreamfruit, which has the same effect as the potion.

Earthroot[]

SproutedPD earth seed
SproutedPD earthroot

"When a creature touches an Earthroot, its roots create a kind of immobile natural armor around it." Stepping on the plant will give the hero the Herbal Armor buff, but moving will deactivate it.

Brewing seeds of Earthroot is likely to yield a potion of Paralytic Gas. Cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in an Earthfruit, which has the same effect as the potion only when thrown, but when eaten grants the Imbued with Earth buff.

Fadeleaf[]

SproutedPD fade seed
SproutedPD fadeleaf

"Touching a Fadeleaf will teleport any creature to a random place on the current level." Any character stepping on the plant will be teleported to a random location on the depth. It does not work on boss depths.

Brewing seeds of Fadeleaf is likely to yield a potion of Mind Vision, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Fadefruit, which has the same effect as the potion.

Firebloom[]

SproutedPD fire seed
SproutedPD firebloom

"When something touches a Firebloom, it bursts into flames." Any character stepping on the plant or item thrown at it will be burned and characters will also get the Burning debuff. Adjacent flammable tiles will also be set on fire. It can also be used to make raw plain/mystery meat safe to eat as chargrilled meat.

Brewing seeds of Firebloom is likely to yield a potion of Liquid Flame. Cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Firefruit, which has the same effect as the potion only when thrown, but when eaten grants the Imbued with Fire buff.

Icecap[]

SproutedPD ice seed
SproutedPD icecap

"Upon being touched, an Icecap lets out a puff of freezing pollen. The freezing effect is much stronger if the environment is wet." Any character stepping on the plant or will be Chilled and potentially Frozen if wet or if they step afterwards on a water tile, and anything in the tiles immediately adjacent will also get chilled/frozen. It can be also used to make raw plain/mystery meat safe to eat as frozen carpaccio.

Brewing seeds of Icecap is likely to yield a potion of Frost. Cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in an Icefruit, which has the same effect as the potion only when thrown, but when eaten grants the Imbued with Ice buff.

Phase Pitcher[]

SproutedPD phase seed
SproutedPD phase plant

"No one knows how it appears or how it grows, but it can change one item into another, like a Well of Transmutation." This message is now incorrect, as the game description has remained unchanged, while the Phase Pitcher plant has been recently changed and it does not act like a well of Transmutation by itself anymore. Stepping on this plant will produce always a Transmutation Item and also a random common berry, and throwing any item into the plant, transmutable or not, will have exactly the same effect with trampling it, unlike Sprouted PD.

Transmutation Item SPS-PD
Transmutation Item
Transmutation Item

Nevertheless, the Transmutation Item inherits the plant's familiar function, as it works like a portable well of Transmutation. Neverrtheless, a difference it has from wells of Transmutation is that it is less powerful than them: it can transmute armors, rings, wands and melee weapons, but not scrolls or potions like the wells can. It also has the limitations of wells of Transmutation in the items even they can't transmute: missile and thrown weapons, bombs etc. Note also that unlike Sprouted PD the hero can plant a Phase Pitcher on a depth that still has an unused well of Transmutation or already another Phase Pitcher planted, as these plants in SPS-PD do not transmute items anyway. For the same reason, heroes are now allowed to place multiple Phase Pitcher plants in a depth.

Keep also in mind that transmutation is no longer restricted to weapons or armors of the same tier (i.e. throwing a glaive in it might give back a knuckleduster or vice versa) and due to the artifacts not being unique drops anymore, it can also rarely drop back the same artifact, or more commonly an artifact already spawned. Note also that when a transmutable item is equipped, the Tansmutation Item is unable to transmute it, so it first must get unequipped to become eligible for transmutation.

Phase Pitcher seeds are rare as high grass drops, and unlike Sprouted PD they are far less common loot in the Wisdom Trial depth (formerly Book of Heavens). Nevertheless, Phase Pitcher plants have become much more common, as randomly one of them always spawns inside a room with a well, which are rather common in the regular dungeon of SPS-PD, and the hero can also farm them by visiting repeatedly the Wisdom Trial depth, which spawns more than 10 of these rooms in each new depth generation (a Blandfruit/Phase Pitcher/Upgrade Eater plant will spawn in each well room of the Wisdom Trial, no matter if the well is active or not). Also the seeds can be rarely found inside the Rat King's chests of Tengu's Hideout and the Dolya Town surface chests and they can be generated by item switches in the Otiluke's Journal Sokoban puzzle 2, 3, 4 depths.

Brewing seeds of Phase pitcher may result in a potion of Might, but not always. Cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Mightyfruit though, which has the same effect as the potion. Unlike Sprouted PD the excessive farming of Phase Pitchers is not useful at all in SPS-PD, as the Trasmutation Items can't transmute scrolls of Magical Infusion to scrolls of Upgrade anymore. Also honeypots in SPS-PD are changed into the Honey food item by just putting them in alchemy pots, and no Transmutation Items are needed for this process anymore either. Nevertheless transmuting less wanted items in the hope of getting a more desired version of them (for example a Sniper transmuting unwanted rings hoping for a ring of Sharpshooting) is still useful in SPS-PD.

Rotberry[]

SproutedPD rot seed
SproutedPD rotberry

"The berries of a young rotberry shrub taste like sweet, sweet death.\n\nGiven several days, this rotberry shrub will grow into another rot heart." Stepping on the bush applies the Rooted debuff, releases Toxic gas, and spawns a Rotberry seed. Unlike Sprouted PD picking up the seed does not sound an alarm. The seed is the object of one of the Old Wandmaker's quests.

Brewing the seed of Rotberry with other seeds has only a 33% chance to brew a potion of Strength. Don't do that. Cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Rotfruit though, that functions like a potion of Strength. Players can do that, if the Old Wandmaker's wand reward doesn't interest them at all.

Seed Pod[]

Seed Pod seed SPS-PD

"Seed Pods look pretty, but the seeds they carry are actually stolen from other plants they kill with their roots." Stepping on the plant will make it release a random group of other seeds as loot. Unlike Shattered PD where it has only a plant and not a seed version, its seeds can spawn infrequently in SPS-PD from trampled high grass. It is not associated with any potion, so it will always brew potions randomly and cooking it with a blandfruit will result in a still unkooked blandfruit. Don't cook blandfruits or brew potions with it.

Sorrowmoss[]

SproutedPD sorrow seed
SproutedPD sorrowmoss

"A Sorrowmoss is a flower (not a moss), with razor-sharp petals, coated with a deadly venom." Any character stepping on the plant will get the Poisoned debuff. The strength of the poison varies depending on dungeon depth (it lasts for 4 + number of depth / 2 turns).

Brewing seeds of Sorrowmoss is likely to yield a potion of Toxic Gas. Cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in an Sorrowfruit, which has the same effect as the potion only when thrown, but when eaten it grants the Imbued with Toxicity buff.

Starflower[]

SproutedPD star seed
SproutedPD starflower

"An extremely rare plant, Starflower is said to grant holy power to whomever touches it." Stepping on the plant gives the hero the Strength and not the Blessed buff, with which the next hit will be extra powerful. Note that enemies stepping on the plant may trample it, but they will not get the buff.

SproutedPD starflower
Star Flower
A common vegetable by starflower

This plant has been moderately changed in SPS-PD as trampling it now also drops a Star Flower edible item, with very low nutritional value, 20, but which applies at the same time the Arcane, 25% Attack Up, 25% Defence Up and Target Shoot buffs all for 30 turns. When the hero has a Starflower seed in the seed pouch and is preparing for a difficult fight, its optimal use is to first step on it and then eat the Star Flower item that will drop, to get the maximum benefit from its buffs.

It also doesn't brew potions of Experience anymore but will produce any other potion randomly. Brewing seeds of Starflower may yield a potion of Experience, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Starfruit, which has the same effect as the potion.

Stormvine[]

SproutedPD storm seed
SproutedPD stormvine

"Gravity affects the Stormvine plant strangely, allowing its whispy blue tendrils to 'hang' on the air. Anything caught in the vine is affected by this, and becomes disoriented." Any character stepping on the plant gets the Vertigo debuff. The plant does not release clouds of confusing gas, which are otherwise associated with this debuff.

Brewing seeds of Stormvine is likely to yield a potion of Levitation, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Stormfruit, which has the same effect as the potion.

Sungrass[]

SproutedPD sun seed
SproutedPD sungrass

"Sungrass is renowned for it sap's slow but healing properties." Stepping on the plant will gradually heal the character and apply the Herbal Healing buff, but moving will deactivate the buff and cease healing. Note that the hero can rest and heal on the plant even when starving, which does not prevent resting in SPS-PD.

Heal Grass SPS-PD
Heal Grass
A common vegetable by sungrass

This plant has been moderately changed in SPS-PD as trampling it now also drops a Heal Grass edible item, with very low nutritional value, 20, but which applies the Regeneration buff (not Herbal Healing), effectively doubling the available uses of the sungrass seed for healing. Unlike Sprouted PD brewing seeds of Sungrass is likely to yield a potion of Healing (in Sprouted PD it almost never does), and cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Sunfruit, which has the same effect as the potion of Healing.

Upgrade Eater[]

Upgrade Eater seed and plant SPS-PD

"A new type of plant that can destroy one type of item and change it into something like a scroll of Upgrade." Like the phase pitcher's message previously, this is also now incorrect, because the Upgrade Eater plant has also been recently changed and it does not transform upgraded items to upgrade goos/items by itself anymore. Stepping on the Upgrade Eater plant will produce always an Upgrade Eater item and also a random common berry, and throwing any item into the plant, upgraded or not, will also have exactly the same effect of producing a berry and an Upgrade Item, unlike Sprouted PD.

Upgrade Eater SPS-PD
Upgrade Eater
Upgrade Eater

Nevertheless, the Upgrade Eater item inherits the plant's familiar function, as it works like a portable "reforging" device. Like in Sprouted PD the Upgrade Eater essentially allows the hero to harvest upgrades from spare items, and transfer them to their preferred gear. Unlike Sprouted PD Upgrade Eater seeds are no longer limited to 15 per run, but they remain a very rare drop from high grass. Nevertheless, Upgrade Eater plants have become much more common, as randomly one of them always spawns inside a room with a well, which are rather common in the regular dungeon of SPS-PD, and the hero can also farm them by visiting repeatedly the Wisdom Trial depth, which spawns more than 10 of these rooms in each new depth generation (a Blandfruit/Phase Pitcher/Upgrade Eater plant will spawn in each well room of the Wisdom Trial, no matter if the well is active or not).

To make it produce an Upgrade Item, the hero will have to use it on an upgraded item, which can be a weapon, armor, ring or wand (artifacts won't work). The hero will then get Upgrade Items in one of 3 colors: Yellow, Red, or Violet. When applied to another item, the Upgrade Item will add upgrade points, depending on the quality of the item devoured by the Upgrade Eater, which will have determined the color of the Upgrade Item. It is suggested that when Upgrade Eaters are available, the hero should upgrade their unused equipment that are in equal number with the eaters to +10 and then use the Upgrade Eaters to the upgraded items, as this will guarantee that the hero will always get the Violet Upgrade Item as an outcome, which is the most powerful among the three. The hero can also get already upgraded weapons from the Wisdom Trial depth to upgrade them further, or wait some more for the Corrupted Otiluke Mirror depth, as all the Animated Statues carry weapons of level +10 or higher, which are from the beginning ready to get turned to Violet Upgrade Items.

SproutedPD yellow upgoo
SproutedPD red upgoo
SproutedPD violet upgoo

Depending on the color Upgrade Items add:

  • Yellow: +1 upgrade
  • Red: +3 upgrades
  • Violet: +5 upgrades

Which color the hero gets depends on how highly upgraded the item that he/she used the Upgrade Eater on. The chance of spawning a Violet Upgrade Item is [level of item]/10. If that fails, the chance of spawning Red is [level of item]/5. If that fails, the chance of spawning Yellow is [level of item]/3. If that also fails (in the case of items lower than +3 level), the hero will get a seed of some kind. There is absolutely no point in using an Upgrade Eater on an item with levels lower than +3, but even with items of higher level but lower than +10, some of the eater's potential is still wasted. In contrast, the hero can guarantee getting Violet Upgrade Items every time by only using the eater on +10 or better items (but he/she should not upgrade items above +10 only to get sure, +10 is always enough). Note also that when a transformable item is equipped, the Upgrade Eater is unable to transform it, so it first must get unequipped to become eligible for transformation. Unlike the Troll Blacksmith, Upgrade Eater items are unbothered by the item being cursed or uncursed, and they transform all items without a problem.

Brewing seeds of Upgrade Eater is likely to yield a potion of Life, but cooking it with a Blandfruit will always result in a Heartfruit, which has the same effect as the potion. They are much more useful for transforming upgraded items to Upgrade Items though.

Nut Vine[]

This plant is described with details in the Alchemy Cooking page of SPS-PD, as it produces items only useful for cooking, and its seed has no consistent behavior in the alchemy of potions, but few details about it should also be mentioned here. It grows only from planting a Seed of Nut Vine and is never generated in gardens as a plant.

Seed

SproutedPD nut
Seed of Nut Vine
Throw this seed to the place you want to grow a nut vine.

Stepping on the plant has no other effect than producing two edible items, the Nut Vine and the Nut.

Plant

Eatable Nut Plant SPS-PD
Nut Vine
A vine with nut. It doesn't have any effect, but both vine and nut are eatable.

Edible product 1

SproutedPD toast nut
Nut
Common dungeon nut. It can be used in cooking.

Edible product 2

Eatable Nut Plant SPS-PD
Nut Vine
A common vegetable, usually used in cooking. Even without cooking it tastes delicious.

The names amd sprites shared among the seed, plant and food items can be confusing, so players should pay attention also to the game descriptions apart from the name that they are displaying, and the part of the inventory they are stored (the seed will be stored in the seed pouch and the nut in the shopping cart for example, while the nut vine plant can't be stored in general). The seed is not associated with any potion, so it will always brew potions randomly and cooking it with a blandfruit will result in a still unkooked blandfruit. Don't cook blandfruits or brew potions with it.
