The Scroll of Challenge is an aggressive scroll.

Description

Scroll of Challenge
When read aloud, this scroll will unleash a challenging roar that will awaken all monsters and alert them to the reader's location.

Obtaining

The Scroll of Challenge can be found randomly at normal depths (not on boss floors) and in shops, or as a random drop from a gnoll shaman.

When read

Challengee

Reading a Scroll of Challenge

All sleeping enemies at the current depth (except for animated statues) are woken up and attracted to the Hero's current position. Enemies that are additionally in Hero's sight when the scroll is read are inflicted with the rage debuff, which makes enemies ignore any environmental hazards. This will for example cause all enemies to step onto traps or fall down chasms if those block the shortest path to the Hero (i.e. moving like flying enemies, with none of the flying benefits). Rage debuff is granted for as many turns as there are tiles of distance between the Hero and any affected enemy.

Tips

  • This scroll makes leveling a little bit easier by increasing the frequency of enemies between fights for a while.
  • If you want to identify scrolls, never do this in a shop. The shopkeeper will flee and won't return.
  • Be sure to prepare the Hero before using the scroll. If it was unidentified, prepare the Hero before the enemies begin to arrive. You can try to heal some of the missing HP and/or even planting a seed of earthroot for its herbal armor buff. Alternatively, position the Hero close to a door for its surprise attack bonus, or at least near a natural chokepoint.
