While death is permanent, not all is lost when the Hero dies. A random item is selected to be left behind to be found on your future run.
Hero's Remains | ||
This is all that's left from one of your predecessors. Maybe it's worth checking for any valuables. | ||
Hero's remains contain a single item dropped by the most recently deceased Hero. This can be any equipped item, an item from quickslot, or item from inventory except for unique and progression items or a gold pile. They always generate on a floor where the most recent death took place if the Hero was eligible to drop remains. You can't find any remains or leave remains behind during daily runs.
Leaving remains behind[]
When an item is being selected, there is a 2/3 chance, that it will be an equipped item; either in a random equipment slot (14.3% for each slot) or a random item in a quickslot (28.6% chance). If the game chooses an empty equipment slot, or a slot with an item which can't be preserved in remains, the process starts over. If the 2/3 chance fails, an item from inventory is selected instead. With only 1 or 2 eligible items it inventory, there is a chance that no item is preserved. Items also can't be preserved on a seeded run. This is to prevent the player from easily preserving a specific item.
Recovering remains[]
Items reserved inside remains will be altered in the following way:
- Equipment has its level capped to +3 (+0 for artifacts) and is always cursed, although the curse doesn't override enchantments allowing for both to be present.
- Any artifact is rerolled if you already encountered it during the current run or replaced with gold if you already encountered all artifacts.
- Stackable items have stack size randomly reduced.
- If you play a seeded run or any run with challenges enabled, any remains you find won't contain the preserved item.
Signature items[]
In addition to an item from the previous run, the remains also contained a broken version of the deceased Hero's unique item. It always appears in remains regardless whether an item has been preserved or not.
