Potions are single-use consumable items that provide various, usually temporary effects. There are 12 potions in the game, and each one has an exotic counterpart. Like scrolls, besides for various improvements to their mechanics and balance changes, they remain similar in theme.
- Potion of might was removed from the game.
- A similar effect can now be achieved with an elixir of might, which can be brewed in alchemy pots. It's temporary, but also stronger than the original.
- Potion of haste was added together with a corresponding plant - swifthistle.
- There is now a constant number of potions of strength in any given run: 10, up from original's 8 to 9.
- There are now new types of potions, both only craftable:
Unidentified potions have a base cost of 30g as well as common ones (healing, mind vision, frost, liquid flame, toxic gas), uncommon ones (haste, invisibility, levitation, paralytic gas, purity) have base cost of 40g and rare ones (strength, experience) have base cost of 50g.
Potion Generation[]
Potions generate scattered in standard rooms as random loot (8 in every 35 items), but they also do appear in shops (3 per room), laboratories (up to 3 per room) and hidden laboratories (2 to 3 per room). Additional potions can be dropped by dwarf warlocks. Scorpios drop random potions too, but they are more likely to drop less common ones and never drop potions of healing. Furthermore, potions can be produced through alchemy by combining any 3 seeds.
Whenever the game tries to generate a random potion, the following probability table is used.
Item | Weight | Chance |
---|---|---|
Potion of strength | 0* | 0.00 % |
Potion of healing | 6 | 20.00 % |
Potion of mind vision | 4 | 13.33 % |
Potion of frost | 3 | 10.00 % |
Potion of liquid flame | 3 | 10.00 % |
Potion of toxic gas | 3 | 10.00 % |
Potion of haste | 2 | 6.67 % |
Potion of invisibility | 2 | 6.67 % |
Potion of levitation | 2 | 6.67 % |
Potion of paralytic gas | 2 | 6.67 % |
Potion of purity | 2 | 6.67 % |
Potion of experience | 1 | 3.33 % |
Besides appearing as random potions, many potions can generate as prize items or be dropped by specific enemies (e. i. fire elementals a potion of liquid flame).
Potion of Experience[]
Potion of Experience | ||
The storied experiences of multitudes of battles reduced to liquid form, this draught will instantly raise your experience level. | ||
When drank, increases Hero's experience level by 1, improving their stats and talents. If the Hero already has level 30, the potion instead grants them 30 turns of blessed buff.
Level up benefits:
- Max and current HP is increased by 5.
- Accuracy and evasion is increased by 1.
- The Hero gains 1 talent point, tier depends on level.
- Allies which scale with Hero level have their stats increased.
This potion and starfruit are the only items allowing to reach level 30 (the maximum level in Shattered PD) unless you choose to ascend, as no regular enemies drop XP past level 28.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of divine inspiration.
Potion of Frost[]
Potion of Frost | ||
The chemical contained in this potion will evaporate into a freezing cloud upon exposure to open air. | ||
When drank or thrown, it will spawn a cloud of frigid air in a 3x3 area, chilling everything inside. If a target stands inside the cloud for too long or is over a water tile, they may end up getting frozen. If the Hero is frozen, there's also a chance that mystery meat or random potions in their inventory will freeze over or shatter, respectively.
Frigid air can:
- Defuse ignited bombs and make them safe to pick up
- Shatter potions laying on the ground (with the exception of potion of strength)
- Turn mystery meat into frozen carpaccio
- Deal damage to enemies with a fiery property, such as the fire elemental.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of snap freeze.
Potion of Haste[]
Potion of Haste | ||
Drinking this oddly sweet liquid will imbue you with tremendous energy for a short time, allowing you to run at high speeds. | ||
When drank, gives a haste buff for 20 turns, which triples Hero movement speed. This effect can stack with other sources of speed, including but not limited to glyphs of swiftness or flow, ring of haste, potion of stamina, Freerunner's momentum etc.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of stamina.
Potion of Healing[]
Potion of Healing | ||
This elixir will rapidly restore your health and instantly cure many ailments. | ||
When drank, restores 0.8 * max HP + 14
HP to over the course of the next couple of turns. The healing is the most potent right after drinking and slowly weakens over time. As the healing is NOT instantaneous (unlike in original PD), you should drink it as soon as Hero's health starts getting low and not wait for the last possible moment.
Additionally, removes the following debuffs:
If the pharmacophobia challenge is enabled, this potion still generates normally, but poisons the Hero instead of healing them or curing any debuffs.
Besides being the most common random potion, this potion is also dropped by enemies in every chapter; fly swarms in the sewers, necromancers in the prison, bats in the caves, warlocks in the city (although they can drop other potions as well) and spawners in the halls. Additionally, it is also guaranteed to spawn in every shop. This makes the healing potion the most widely available source of healing. However, every "renewable" source can only provide a limited amount of healing potions each run to prevent farming.
Source | Initial chance | Drop cap |
---|---|---|
Swarms | 1/6 | 5 |
Necromancers | 1/5 | 6 |
Bats | 1/6 | 7 |
Warlocks | 1/6 | 8 |
Alchemy | 1/6 (1 sungrass), 1/2 (2), 1 (3) | 10 |
The drop chance decreases with each drop until it becomes 0 when the drop cap is reached.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of shielding.
Potion of Invisibility[]
- See also: Invisibility
Potion of Invisibility | ||
Drinking this potion will render you temporarily invisible. While invisible, enemies will be unable to see you. Attacking an enemy, as well as using a wand or a scroll before enemy's eyes, will dispel the effect. | ||
When drank, makes the Hero invisible for 20 turns. Invisibility hides you from enemies for the duration of the effect, and turns your next attack into a surprise attack, as long as it is dealt before the duration ends. Effect is immediately dispelled upon attacking or using scrolls and wands (including non-offensive ones, or ones used with no enemies in sight).
If flooded vault generates in a floor, 1 potion of invisibility is guaranteed to spawn on that floor as a prize item.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of shrouding fog.
Potion of Levitation[]
Potion of Levitation | ||
Drinking this curious liquid will cause you to hover in the air, able to drift effortlessly over traps and pits. Throwing this potion will create a cloud of unrefined gas, disorienting anything caught in it. | ||
Lets the user float above terrain for the next 20 turns. While levitating, the Hero can't trample grass or plants, fall into chasms and trigger traps and is also completely immune from ground based trap effects (gripping, flashing, pitfall). However, the Hero also can't interact with water; fire can't be extinguished, ooze can't be washed away and glyph of flow has no effect. This effect is most useful to get past rooms with chasms and traps. If trap room or 4 golden chests room generates in a floor, one potion of levitation is guaranteed to spawn on that floor as a prize item.
Warning: when levitating, the game will still attempt to autopath the Hero to the designated tile using the shortest path available, which can lead to falling down a chasm if the potion effect wears off.
Throwing the potion will create 1000 units of confusing gas, which applies the vertigo debuff to anything inside. The debuff makes it very difficult to leave the gas cloud (aside from teleporting away) and can easily make creatures step into traps and pits.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of storm clouds.
Potion of Liquid Flame[]
Potion of Liquid Flame | ||
This flask contains an unstable compound which will burst violently into flame upon exposure to open air. | ||
When drank or thrown, sets a 3x3 area ablaze, applying burning debuff to targets and spreading fire over adjacent flammable tiles. The debuff will be removed automatically over time, by standing on a water tile or by shattering any potion over Hero tile. If the Hero had been burning for several turns straight, there is a chance that scrolls (except the scroll of upgrade) will burn up or mystery meat will turn into chargrilled meat, respectively.
Fire can:
- Burn flammable tiles: doors, barricades, trampled grass, tall grass, furrowed grass, plants.
- Burn most scrolls and turn mystery meat into chargrilled meat
- Make bombs on the ground explode instantly
- Evaporate dew drops
- Instantly kill rotberry heart, providing no rotberry seed drop and rendering the quest reward locked.
1 potion of liquid flame is guaranteed to appear as a prize item per any barricade room or a secret runestone room spawned on a floor. This potion is also dropped by fire elementals.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of dragon's breath.
Potion of Mind Vision[]
- See also: Mind Vision
Potion of Mind Vision | ||
After drinking this, your mind will become attuned to the psychic signature of distant creatures, enabling you to sense biological presences through walls. Also this potion will permit you to see through nearby walls and doors. | ||
When drank, grants 20 turns of mind vision buff which allows the Hero to see up to 2 tiles through walls and displays the position of all enemies on the current depth, revealing a 3x3 area around them.
Effects depending on having enemies in sight will work as if the monsters were encountered within normal field of view; scroll of psionic blast will deal less damage to the hero, most special Hero armor (with the armor kit applied) functions will work as intended.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of magical sight.
Potion of Paralytic Gas[]
Potion of Paralytic Gas | ||
Upon exposure to open air, the liquid in this flask will vaporize into a numbing yellow haze. Anyone who inhales the cloud will be paralyzed instantly, unable to move for some time after the cloud dissipates. This item can be thrown at distant enemies to catch them within the effect of the gas. | ||
When drank or thrown, this potion will emit 1000 units of paralysing gas, temporarily preventing any creature caught in it from taking any action and stopping their animation. Paralysis only ends once the gas dissipates or the creature takes enough damage to snap out of paralysis. This makes the potion of paralytic gas a very powerful crowd control tool, but also extremely harmful if accidentally drank or shattered.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of earthen armor.
Potion of Purity[]
Potion of Purity | ||
This magical reagent will quickly neutralize all harmful effects in a large area. Drinking it will give you temporary immunity to such effects. | ||
When thrown, removes all ground or airborne effects in a 7x7 area.
When drank, grants 20 turns of blob immunity, which protects against all gases and (unlike in original PD) also against electricity, fire and cold air blobs.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of cleansing.
Potion of Strength[]
Potion of Strength | ||
This powerful liquid will course through your muscles, permanently increasing your strength by one point. | ||
One of the progression items. When drank, permanently raises Hero strength stat by 1 point, bringing them closer to the strength requirement for most higher-tier items.
Unlike other potions, this potion never spawns as a random potion, but it always generates as a prize item. As such, it's more likely to appear in some special rooms and can never appear in hidden rooms and shops or as enemy drop. Exactly 10 potions of strength generate per run, 2 in each chapter. Of those 2, one will be found in either the 1st or 2nd floor, and the second one in either 3rd or 4th floor of the area. As acquiring more strength is vital, try identifying this potion as soon as possible and never throw unidentified potions until you do so. However, after your Hero is strong enough to equip endgame gear, there is a little advantage to be gained from drinking more strength potions.
As this potion is a progression item alongside scrolls of upgrade, it cannot be destroyed with frost.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of mastery.
Potion of Toxic Gas[]
Potion of Toxic Gas | ||
Uncorking or shattering this pressurized glass will cause its contents to explode into a deadly cloud of toxic green gas. You might choose to fling this potion at distant enemies instead of uncorking it by hand. | ||
When drank or thrown, this potion will emit a cloud of toxic gas, which will deal damage over time to all targets within the range. The damage dealt per turn scales with depth and is equal to 1 + depth/5
.
The exotic variant of this potion is the potion of corrosive gas.
