How I got the All Rings Identified badge

    Ray L.H wrote:
Wow.  How did you get all rings?  The max rings that I can get in a run are 4, or 5.
And, more importantly, how did you beat the game so many times???

Let me start by saying (with as much modesty as I can muster at this point), this achievement (as well as the Identify All Wands, which is similar) is by far the hardest one in the game!   To set out on getting this achievement, you need to be a confident player; by confident, I mean you should at least have all but 1 of your high score slots as wins.  For a bit of background, I have beaten the game so far with every hero class (raw) and subclass, as well as with all sorts of stupid weapon combos.   In this successful attempt, I completed the game over 10 times alone; it's NOT EASY!

In a normal successful PD completion, you might be lucky to get 4-5 rings max!  Sometimes, as little as 1, or 2.  However, after getting to depth 26 with a warrior character, who had identified 9 rings (complete fluke), I realised that this achievement would be possible with the utilization of Hero's Remains.

Hero's Remains gives you a possibility of finding items from a previous character.  Thus, if done correctly, every new depth you go to will give you a 50% chance of receiving a ring you don't have yet.  I suggest, before you set out on this epic quest (and it is EPIC), you familiarize yourself with how to correctly take advantage of Hero's Remains.

Before I jump into a how to, I will give a small list of things that you NEED to be confident with, before attempting this.

1.)  Game play with the Assassin

Whilst it is technically possible to do this with any hero class, the assassin is best.  Namely because you can instantly identify a ring, merely by putting it on.  This saves you the possibility of getting stuck with unknown cursed rings, and in my opinion the, assassin is the easiest hero to play late game, but that is a personal preference.

2.)  Game completion and Boss Tactics

Again I can't stress enough how important it is to be able to wiggle your way out of tight spaces.  This isn't so important for the ring slaves you'll be using, as you can always just run those again, however you have to be confident that you can turn your main character's run into a successful run, no matter what!  There's nothing worse than identifying 8/10 rings, and then dying because of a stupid mistake!

    3.)  Upgrades and Transmutation

This is another interesting one.  It is all too common to rely on the fact that your +12 Glaive has a Grim enchantment, which will allow you to output even more damage.  Which isn't going to be possible in this game run through.  You need to use all the wells of transmutation you find on rings, which means that you are going to be taking the hit on being able to enchant your weapons.  I strongly suggest doing a few play-throughs in advance, trying to use a Tier-4 weapon without an enchantment, to beat at least the Dwarven King.  (Tier 4 weapons, being the Battle Axe and the Longsword).  For a bit more practice, maybe even try using just a Tier-3 weapon (it's possible.. I've done it).

With these things in mind, I'll outline the deceptively simple method of gaining this achievement.   This isn't a 'how to beat the game' tutorial, and I'm going to be assuming that you are familiar with every trick in the book to pull this off.  If you're not, I strongly suggest hitting up the TIPS page and practicing a bit, if you want a bit of extra help, maybe message me, or one of the mods, with specific questions and/or queries.

How to get the achievement (assuming worse case scenarios), step by step:

1.)  Start new game with the Assassin sub-class; run through the first 5 depths and beat Goo.  DON'T go to depth 6!!!  (I also suggest doing this during the night time, it is harder but will give you that little bit more of a boost in survivability for the first half of the game)

2.)  Start a new character and play through the game like normal, until you get 2 rings that you don't have on your main character.

3.)  Upon obtaining these two rings, backtrack to the depth after the depth that your main is on (in the first instance, this is depth 6).

    4.)  Die.

5.)  Open up your main character again. (NOTE: this requires you to quit to Menu and then select the Assassin character; you can't just hit the 'try again' button.)

6.)  With your main, progress down to the next depth and clear this depth, ideally finding the Hero's Remains and receiving a ring from it.  Again, get to the ladder down and quit this character.

7.)  Repeat steps 2-6 until you get the achievement.

    Sounds simple right?  HAH!

    Things to remember:

    • Hero's Remains still spawn at Boss Depths, so don't forget that.
    • Never progress to a new depth on your main, without first dying on that depth with a different character, who possesses two rings you don't have equipped.
    • You may sometimes have to discard a ring slave, as you didn't find the rings you want, don't be afraid of this; however, you also need to not progress your main after these runs, just do it again.
    • Nearing the end of your Quest, you will be needing a couple of very specific rings (evasion for instance); equipping a ring slave with two of the same ring will work the same way as normal, only, you will ensure that if a ring is dropped, you already know what it is.
    • Use the Well of Transmutation (now guaranteed to appear at least once every run) to change an unneeded ring. This is mainly for your main account, but also applies to your ring slaves later in the quest, when you are looking for specific rings to transfer to your main.
    • Rings take up space; feel free to ditch unneeded and/or cursed ones after you've identified them. However, if you do this make sure you keep a list of which ones you have identified!!! There's nothing worse than not knowing which ones you have yet to identify; haha.
    • YOU DON'T NEED ALL THE RINGS    Cool, I know.. You only need to identify 10 of the 12 rings for this achievement. The reason being is that, the Ring of Thorns and the Ring of Haggler are not needed (as they are completely luck based). Having said this, if you manage to get these two special rings, it actually allows you to skip one of the common rings in your collection. I personally never got the Ring of Herbalism, and yet, still got the achievement because I had both of these special rings.

That's essentially all from me.  If you have questions, or I've missed things, please do ask.

With this method, you could technically finish the achievement by depth 13-15, but in all reality, it will probably take at least to depth 20, or deeper, as you're guaranteed to make a few mistakes.

Be patient and play smart.. And may the odds be ever in your favor!

    • Right!!!But…How I'll be sure if I will get the ring, and not just a useless pile of money?(since that we cannot drop money from backpack)

        Loading editor
    • The only time you drop money is if there is nothing in one of your dead hero's item slots, for instance if I have weapon, armour and only 1 ring then there is a 1/4 chance that it will 'drop' the empty ring slot which will result in money being found. If you have all 4 slots filled with something you will always receive one of those items and not money.. Read up here: http://pixeldungeon.wikia.com/wiki/Hero%27s_remains :)

    • Grats on your accomplishment, CJTC... I have yet to get that or the wand badge.

I noticed you suggest to run an assassin because of the rogue's ability to identify a ring, but I'd argue that the biggest reason to use a rogue is the fact that they already start off with a ring of shadows... a free ring is a big boon to trying to get this badge! If you try to get the badge on other classes, you're just making it harder on yourself!.

I didn't know you could seed a single game with multiple hero remains by running other heroes to the depth below your main hero... hmm...

There's still a lot of luck involved, as even if your mule/slave has two rings, it's only a 50% chance your main will find them off their bones.

This is true, however on any other char as main you could keep suiciding the rogue and restarting the main till you got the ring of shadows. But I agree. Personally I chose rogue because of the identifying. Having to wear a -ve ring for the full identifying duration (even if you've uncursed it) isn't a health risk.

You can only seed one hero remains per depth. But theoretically that's 25 hero remains so at 50% that's 12.5 (first one garunteed) rings...  You start with 1 and will probably find at least 2 in your run and you get one from the imp. So whilst it is luck based the odds are defs in your favor..  That's obviously simplified but you get the gist :)

Working on the wand at the moment..  It's killing me! 25 at 25% is 7.5 + 1 from wand maker and 2 from main run through..  It's tight as.   :S

The problem I'm finding is that it's too hard to commit suicide and to stop a good run... so I just took a rogue all the way to the end with a +12 galve and now bringing them back to die with the Amulet of Yendor in possession, pity you can't equip the AofY and try to collect 2....

    • Note that you can use ankh at bosses depth, to reset entirely the depth, and so get another hero remain. (When you die, don't forget to keep only one ankh in your bag, and to let all other items on the previous depth, not in the depth resetl!) There are 4 ankhs, and you can easily find gold with the hero remains when you don't have the ring... so you still have 11 attempts. ;) It would be really be un-epic if you don't find your last ring, good luck!

BUT the good news is MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! Last night I had yet another slave who'd made it all the way and with that one elusive detection ring in possession and equipped (if you're doing this epic quest trying to find 2 of the rings you're missing doubles the odds!) - so I had a 1/4 chance to drop on level 19 for my (by now) very powerful huntress.(a +10 boomerang and more)... the dissappointment in picking up a +6 weighted for accuracy galve was palpable... so I soldiered on around level 19 and completed the imp ring quest and TA DA!!! Thanks you very much Mr Imp - I was rrewarded with the final DETECTION RING - MY PRECIOUS!!! Will post some screen shots later when I have time. So mission accomplished CJTC - only took 2 months, probably around 150 games played.... now for the real challenge... the wands.... and then after that all of Watabou's new challenges...

    • I was just able to complete this badge today on level 17. It took a few weeks, even though I had 9 rings identified by level 12 after a short time. Early on I was very lucky with ring drops. After that, slaves stopped dropping rings. I played as Free-runner, and started using the hero's remains for rings before Goo, not after. I used Warlocks and Gladiators as slaves, and I ended up with one really well-equipped character by the time I reached the caves. I took a chance today killing my Gladiator slave on level 17 (after retrieving the amulet) with only one ring slot containing a needed ring (Evasion+4), but figured I had a few more levels with a very strong hero + the imp quest to accomplish the badge. As the original poster stated, 10 rings are sufficient. I have rings of Thorns (2) and Haggler, but am still missing Power and Satiety. I am going to keep trying for those two with this character because I found the whole challenge quite a bit of fun.

Before trying to complete this badge, I never really took full advantage of hero's remains to beat the game, which I was able to do playing as all subclasses. Learned a lot from this quest. And had some fun with some slaves acquiring the amulet before backtracking to die and hopefully drop a ring. And got really frustrated other times with slaves being killed by stupid mistakes while equipped with two needed rings. I rarely use the armor kit, but did for a few slaves who otherwise would probably not have been able to retrieve the amulet. I am sure the information is here somewhere, but I found out for myself that Rogues cannot wear a Warrior Suit of Armor. I couldn't sell it either, unless I can sell it to the imp after I reach level 21.

What a great game. Much thanks to the creator, the original poster and other commenters. Will take some time away from the game, but surely will go for the Wands badge at some point.

      It’s straightforward: Hero's remains.

    • I like slaving with the Fighter class because he can usually drop at least a +1 short sword on the early levels, which can be reforged.  It is like dropping a scroll of upgrade between games.  My main character has a +10 balanced glaive without using any upgrade scrolls from that run, along with a +7 ring of haste.  It is making the main character run much easier.

        Loading editor
    • The idea of dying with a +1 short sword is excellent, especially on the higher levels (when your main character has already a very good weapon).

I am currenlty on level 9 waiting to go to level 10, with 8 rings in my bag.

I've started with assassin, got two rings different from shadows, died on level 1, got one ring from skeleton remain of them already at level 1. so basically my quest started with two rings already identified. Then I used warrior as slave.

It's also important to dye with equipment that the main character could use. I've used a spear +3 to beat Goo.

Along the way I had to give up to a grim war hammer +4, soo sad but had to remain focused on the main goal.

Finally I believe it's fundamental to save the remove curse and upgrade scrolls for the rings, as the equipment is coming anyway from the hero remaining.

      Cheers and thanks CJTC!

    • Ok so I'm about to start this badge (after having completed wands...) but I'm not so clear on one thing. When I did the wands quest I suicided the Mage slave until my Main received Magic Missile from remains on depth 1. It wasn't until I had all but two wands that I realized magic missile wasn't necessary for the badge at all (it is considered identified from the start of the game, whether or not you've ever acquired it).

So my question as far as rings is concerned is this: Haggler and Thorns. Do I need them at all? I know they're luck based, so not required for the badge, HOWEVER, does Haggler/Thorns reduce the overall count in any way? Or are they just arbitrary rings they I shouldn't bother to collect?

      Cheers

I'm affraid I'm not entirely sure, from memory you don't need those rings to get the achievement however getting them does contribute towards it. So (im makingnumbers up here) you need to identify 10/12 rings to get it.

However I thought this was the same with the wands, it's possible that an undate at some point changed this mechanic. I'm not sure, sorry :)

Your numbers are exactly correct, and they do contribute towards the badge. See Badge, and look at the description of those badges.

Nope. The appearance of the Wand of Magic Missile doesn't change like the Ring of Haggler and Ring of Thorns.
