For those of you who have not been following the progress over the last little while, I was challenged (and picked up the challenge mentioned many times on these forums) that the Identification Mega badge was unobtainable..

    It is not.

    ..*Dramatic pause*
    .
    .
    .
As of about 8:30 this morning, I finally achieved this badge!!

I don't currently know of anyone else who has done this?  If you have, please do add your comments to the hilarity and frustration that is this achievement.

For more of an in-depth strategy guide into the mechanisms of obtaining the Rings & Wands achievements, see my previous post on obtaining the all rings Id'd badge.

As a quick run-down, it essentially involves having a Main account (Assassin) and a Slave type (Warlock).

    • The Slave type does runs, getting the wands/rings you want, and then suicides at the depth directly under the one on which your Main is.
    • You then progress one depth on your Main (hopefully), picking up the desired item, and repeat the process.

As mentioned previously, this makes getting the rings achievement not too dificult, as things go.  The only major consideration is that you need to be confident in finishing the game with your Main character.

I will get to the story time in a bit, but bear with me.  I would like to know if people would like me to write a little tutorial on the two methods of playing this game.  I think, for achievements like this, they are very useful.  But if no one really cares, then I shan't waste the time.  Let me know ;)

    Methods of Obtaining

Anyway, the two methods in short are 'Snowballing' & 'Forcing'; they are essentially as follows:

    Snowballing

This is, in effect, a 'balls deep' apporach.  You use minimal tactics in the first 5-10 depths, relying on item drops, luck, and a sheer number of efforts, to allow you to reach a decent character faster.

The concept is that, if I play 20 games, of those 20, 10-15 will get past Goo.  9-12 past Tengu.  However, of these 9-12, probably only a few will be good enough to continue all the way to the end.  Snowballing forces you to restart these, and hopefully not waste your time.

The strategy is basically to just fight everything head on, and eventually, you are left with a strong character.  This will always feel strange, letting a character die, even though you know you could hold on.  But it is, in the end, for the best.

    Forcing

This is the game that most people play on a regular basis.

It essentially means you make your character survive at all costs.  This is the mindset that has you blasting yourself with fire & jumping off cliffs to avoid bad odds, or hiding in dead-end rooms, hoping a monster won't find you.

People's ability to 'force' a character will vary.  Some people might be able to force a character to Tengu 1 in 10 times.

With a lot of practice & enough game sense, you can start forcing characters all the way to Yogi.

Currently, I would say (if I was to force every character), I would expect a win ratio of somewhere between 1/5 and 1/6.  This sounds high, but I've been playing for too long; and with the current additions making the game increasingly easier, this ratio will continue to increase.

Anyway I digress.  What I was getting at, is that, for this ring/wand farming to work, you want to give yourself a head start.

I suggest snowballing your Main for at least the first 5 depths, and then start forcing from there.

As for your Slaves.  Snowball all the way!!!  Your character turn-around is much higher, but it is a lot faster.  The only times I was forcing my Slaves were right at the end (when my main is at depth 23, and my slave gets the desired wand at depth 2..  This turns into rather a long force; haha)

    Anyway tactics aside. Story time.

    Walkthrough

My main was an Aassassin.  Mostly because I consider it the second most powerful sub spec in the game.

For the rings achievement, you can use any characters for Main and Slave.

However, for the wands, you HAVE to use the mage for the Slave.  No other character allows you to drop a wand.  As such, the Warlock was my Slave.  Which is fine with me because it just happens to be the single best sub in the game.

After snowballing my Assassin (we'll call him Wilfred) to level 5, and beating Goo, I started the tedious process of aquiring all the wands in the game.  I will point out that despite snowballing, I never started an assassin without getting the default magic wand off a Hero's Remains at the first depth.  If this was a failure, I reset straight away.  As a result, it took me about 17 tries to actually get the wand, and then snowball to Goo.  (just fun stats for you)

At this point, the slaving began in ernest.  Wilfred #3 (the first 2 wilfreds both failed, number one died at depth 23, and number 2 got to depth 26, but was missing 2 wands) had a wand of disintegration +4, wand of blink, and wand of firebolt.  By depth 10, he also had flock, lightning, avalanche, and another blink.  By this point I was forcing wilfred rather hard.  The disjointed nature of the run proves rather hard sometimes.  He only had a +2 sword and a +3 mail armor, until depth 17..

By depth 20, we were getting somewhere.  Wilfred had some reasonable armor going & a +3 war hammer.  There were only 3 wands left to get:  teleportation, telekinesis, and regrowth. I will admit, I almost gave up at this point.  Some encouraging words from a friend made me keep going.  (3 wands in 6 levels is not very likely.  There is only a 1/4 chance of a drop.  So the probability of this run working was decreasing rapidly).

At depth 21, I received a lovely stash of coins from the Hero's Remains.  (I will point out that this stash of coins represented 3 completed PD runs with the warlock, before I got the Wand of Regrowth.  Beat the game 3 times, only to have a splash of money on my Main..

Depth 22.  FINALLY!  Got the Wand of Regrowth!  A very helpful wand, you'll agree.  Ok; I only had 2 wands to go; 4 depths remaining.

It took me 3 real days to snowball a warlock into getting the desired wand, and then forcing them to depth 23.  The game was beaten another 3 times, and there were not a couple of warlocks suicided at depths 22-24, from sheer frustration.

Eventually, the final Slave came along.  And in typical Pixel Dungeon form, this mongrel obtained not 1, but both of the desired wands.. at Depth 3 & 4.. This was a most stressful forcing, but it happened; I got there.  Rushed the demon depths because he was simply not strong enough, made it to depth 23, and suicided in a beautiful splash of blood, love hearts, and laser beams.

    Moment of truth..

Progressed to depth 23 with wilfred, after a blood bath of a completely different nature (total of +10 evasion at this point..) came across 2 skeletons in the same room.  It was rather poetic, tapped the first one and got a splash of coins.  Never mind, say I, It's obviously this other one.. *Click*..  I got a potion of frost from that skeleton.  A potion of frost is never the most exciting of items to receive, but let me tell you, that was the single most brutally dissapointing, mind numbingly painful potion of frost I have ever received..

Something in me broke, and I essentially just decided to snowball wilfred the rest of the way.  #YOLOSWAG, balls deep; don't care anymore.

For the record, there is one thing I forgot to mention previously, and that is, that, with the existence of the Mage's wand, you only need to identify all but one of the wands. Meaning, that without my knowledge, I really only had a single wand left to ID.

You can thus imagine my surprise upon pushing through depth 23, and onto depth 24, when I came across a room with a wand.  I picked up the wand.  Purpleheart.  ..

    ... ...  I used it..

The burst of excitement could POOOooosibly have been heard from the other side of town.  :P

I present to you Wilfred in all his pained glory.

The moment when countless hours become slightly more less wasted haha

I particularly liked the words under the achievement..  "Nothing happened"

Wilfred went on to defeat Yogi in another blaze of glory.  He now lives with his rat (I don't actually know..) and his copious number of wards in my heart.  In that little place reserved for those you truly hate, and yet can't quite let go..

Using anything other than the equipped one gets confusing. All too easy to teleport yourself instead of summoning a flock of sheep...

    10615871 10204887957426630 313952327 n

The achievement you really want to see in a top rankings.

For the record, this was completely legit.  I will personally hate you for always, if you try and tell me I cheated; haha.  But to each their own.

Again, I highly encourage the pursuit of this achievement.  It is one of those ones that really does make you feel like you achieved something.

Wilfred and his pet rat... Why wilfred has a pet rat we will never know O.o

I still don't know why wilfred has a pet rat..??

    Tips

Some tips for you if you feel like the challenge.

    Slave choice

I advise you to try the warlock as your slave.  Spend all of your upgrade scrolls on the knuckledusters (you heard me).  I can tell you right now, that +13 Knuckledusters (speed) will demolish everything.  With the added bonus that you can't be disarmed by dwarf monks.. Always a plus.

    Calculations

When doing calculations, keep in mind that you always get a wand from the wand maker.  You can also normally count on 1-3 wands on your main, that he will just find naturally.  And you should use all transmutation wells for wands as well..  As amazing as +13 Knuckledusters of Vampirism (speed) would be, wands are our priority.

    Which wand?

To identify a wand, all you need to do is use it once.  Before you buy the wand holster, you may need to discard a few, to keep inventory space.  I suggest keeping a little list of the wands that you have ID'd already.  Personally, I just had a little note on my phone, that I would update with each new wand.

    Wand types/order

Try to focus on either offensive, or utility, wands.  Initially, you will notice that, by the end of my run, all I needed were utility wands.  This gives me a higher chance of the wand maker giving me a wand that I actually need.  This isn't actually important for your main, but it will save you time.

    Know when to give up

As much as it hurts, if you are at (for example) DM-300, and have only ID'd 5-6 wands, then you need to start again.  Always play the numbers.  You can get lucky (Wilfred = case in point), but I got lucky with 1 drop.  6 drops is very different.  This is just a friendly tip.  Feel free to ignore.  But redoing the first 15 depths is much easier than struggling through the final 10.  Keep in mind, the further you go, the further ALL of your slaves will have to make it.

    Never have fun

I lied; always have fun.  Enjoy the characters, enjoy the pain.  Embrace your hate; haha.

    That's all from me.

Still trying to retire from this game..

I've been doing it all wrong all this time... I've only been interested in ascensions... how could I have missed all the agonizing pain of those badges all this time?

    • Impressive! Thanks for all information, and the nice story.

This badge ask for so much time... To cross the dungeon again, and again, and again, with all the slaves... And luck! I don't know if it's possible to have hero remains on floor 26, and 25?  Anyway, you have 12 wands to find... The first is "easy", because you really start only if you get a wand on foor 1. Then, you can find only 24 hero remains from floor 2 to 25. With 25% chance only to get the weapon, you will receive only 6 specific wands on average, so 7 wands in total: 5 are missing! Ok, you will find wands as treasures, with the old wandmaker, with transmutation well, but you can't be sure you get new ones... and you have to do no mistake! (I'm pretty sure I would forget to make the slave die on some floors, or to equip the wand before he suicides. :D)

Note: If you use ankh, you can have more hero remains. I don't think it's a well known strategy... If you use an ankh at a boss depth, the depth is totally reset, including hero remains (tested). So, even if you already used a hero remains at a boss depth, 1) if you send a "slave" with the important items equiped to suicide at this boss depth, 2) then your "master" put all his stuff just before the boss depth, go down at this boss depth with one ankh on him and die, 3) he will have a new hero remain in this new generated boss depth. Then, you just have to climb stairs to take back your stuff... and kill the boss again! ;) With the 4 ankhs, you can have 4 hero remains more, so, 1 specific wand more on average... it counts! When you were depth 23, if you could find 3500 gold to buy all ankhs, you had more chances that you though to find the missing wand. ;) For example, if your master go back to depth 5 for example, these slaves "only" have to go to the old wandmaker, then come back to depth 5 to die there... or start a new slave if they didn't find any good wand... For the wand's badge, I guess you can do this even after you found the amulet. (At least, you can get the 40 food's badge after the amulet...)

I am surprised about some points. Why didn't you give a better equipment earlier to your master? Just to save time? Or because you are such a fan of the knuckelduster? As you knew that 75% of the time the hero remain will be an armor or a ring, Wilfried could become really strong, isn't it? (Giving him an upgraded powerful wand of Fireball could be nice too. ;) ) And... how could Wilfried #1 die? You didn't farm some healing potion with you master? Once you pass Goo, if you farm healing potions on flies (then bat), it's hard to die... Usually, I don't farm... But if one day I try this badge, and I have a good start, I will wait to have something like 25 health potions before I pass DM-300, to be sure to finish the game. I started with the version 1.7.1, and the 1.7.2 is easier with weightstones... So I would say that with "forcing" (farming...), the ratio could be 1/3 (even 1/2 ?...), most of the heroes dying before Goo. Especially if you add hero remains to help him! (In fact, I would say I have only one playstyle... but heroes with bad luck -or "important" heroes- just need more health potions, so it can take more time if I "force" them. :D )

The separation between battle wand and non-battle wand is interesting! Would it be better to start with non-battle wands, so you would have the wand of regrowth (and teleportation, and slow) earlier?

I think you would be a good player to finish the game with all in-game challenges activated, using hero remains to have a really powerfull character. :) The difference here is that you have to upgrade what you want to give as hero remains (only weapon and rings), and manage with what you find for the rest...   In the begining, it's "easy" to give a weapon +5 and two rings +5. But higher, it becomes difficult if you don't use slaves for the slaves... but it would take so much time... (Maybe the warrior would be a good slave here, as he can use upgrade scrolls on rings, and give the useful "reforge-able" sword +1.) Once your character has good weapon and rings, it's sure he won't need hero remains at each depth... but the dungeon is capricious. ;)

Nice tip with the Ankh! I did not know that! Defs a mechanic to take advantage of if trying for this achievement!. You are right, the extra 4 hero remains is enough to turn the tables (possibly)

The reason for the equipment was essentially time. For me to have good equipment early on it would require me to be running my slaves quite deep which takes too long (remembering that you're going to have to reset your master a number of times before you get where you want to be. For those that are beginner players and not as confident then yes I would suggest farming for weapons and armour early on as well. But personally I was pretty confident with being able to force through. Same with the potion farming. A very valid strat, but it's one of those things I do only when I feel threatened. (Wilfred#1 died because of a paralysis potion mis throw and 3 evil eyes... he had plenty of survivability and utility, just a retarded controler haha)

Yes, I would definitely recomend trying to focus on utility wands initially. For me I was just getting impatient (this took me way to long!) so it was essentially just the first wand I found that I didn't already own on the main. Which happened to be most of the attack wands first.

I am currently working on all in game challenges. However I have decided that (unlike the ID badge) this one is actually possible without exploiting the Hero remains mechanics. I may change my mind later but I've managed to get to depth 16 already without them so I reckon I can get all the way. Honeslty just died of a mistake that time. Reminded me of when I first started PD haha. It's nice to have that crazy dificulty back :D  And it makes seeds so much more precious haha (you can still get them from chests and such). One biggest lesson so far...  Don't use your one bread to trigger traps...  It turns into cash, rather rage quit worthy :P

    • I decided to run for the ring/wand badges myself, and I figured I'd post a few addendums here about my thoughts on the "Identify all rings/wands" challenge.

      1. One run can be for both badges! You can attempt both badges simultaneously, as having a mule with 1 wand and two rings doesn't hurt the chances of getting something for either badge, and in fact increases the chance that your main char will get at least one of those badges! The only downside is that you'll have to choose rings or wands when it comes to wells of transmutation

      2. If you're going just for rings, try running different classes as mules! It's going to happen 50% of the time that you don't get the set of rings your mule is holding on to, but when you fail to get a ring, you could have a 50% chance to get a reforgeable +1 short sword (free upgrade for your main's weapon) from a warrior or a +X boomerang from a huntress (just equip it as your melee weapon before dying).

      3. If you're doing either just rings, or rings & wands, use the Rogue as your main. Like CJTC said in his all rings badge post , the rogue identifies rings on equip... but more importantly, he starts with a ring of shadows... putting you 1/10th of the way to the badge the moment you set foot in the dungeon!

      4. Again, as CJTC pointed out, the wand of magic missile, ring of haggler, and ring of thorns are not counted toward the max number of different wands/rings you have to collect (12 wands, 10 rings), but DO count toward your tally, making them essentially free points toward your goal. If your mule gets one of these, make sure you attempt to pass it on!

Here's the joke; haha.  I initially thought of this (the rings one) after getting to the end with a Warrior who had all but one of the rings.  Ironically, the tip that Chouia posted about Boss Depth Resets would have almost gotten me the initial rings achievement in a single run, with maybe 1, or 2, Hero's Remains; haha.  So frustrating.  But life goes on.

    • having done all the rings, I am currently working on all the wands, trying to follow in the footsteps of CJTC, currently my Master Rogue is on depth 8 with 7 different wands identified, with no use of wells yet... I'm about to get another wand from the Wandmaster - anyone know how many wands are classified 'battle' vs 'non-battle'. I'll do a quick wiki search. Am assuming 'battle' wands = firebolt, lightning, poison, disintegration definitely, but it might also include Amok + Slowness as they act on enemies... Is it 6 wands each category? (excluding Magic Missile - which I now realise I have passed on through hero remains UNECCESARILY!)

    • Well done!  (this is CJTC. cbs logging in, haha)
That's quite a good run so far!
Battle wands are only wands that can directly inflict damage, so you're just missing avalanche from that.
      The full list is:

      Battle wands:

      • Avalanche
      • Disintegration
      • Magic Missile
      • Firebolt
      • Lightning
      • Poison

      Non-battle wands:

      • Amok
      • Blink
      • Flock
      • Regrowth
      • Slowness
      • Telekinesis
      • Teleportation

The Magic Missile wand is the first one you should get every time.  It isn't useless because it still counts for the achievement.  Getting that wand means you can skip one of the other wands and still get the achievement.  (only 12 wands needed for the badge)

Best of luck!  I'm rooting for you!  Haha!

      P.S.

I've just copied that list from the Wand page on the wiki.  :)

Thanks, CJTC.  This is my best Wand run to date.  Have just finished Level 8 and have 8 wands ID-ed!!

Disintegration, Lightning, Magic Missile, Telekinesis, Amok, Regrowth, Fireball + now Slowness (transmuted disintegration)
My main character has also collected Ring of Haggler and +5 Ring of Evasion from hero remains.
Being a Rogue he now has a +4 Ring of shadows as well.
But crap weapons and mediocre armor.

I have decided that since it is 1/4 slave wand drop rate, I might as well keep going with the slaves, until they find 2 rings, and then suicide.  And since I am always dropping equipped wands with my slave, there is no point in upgrading any weapon on the slaves, so that, over time (when I don't get the wand being dropped), I am dropping better rings and armor, and therefore ensuring that the Master can survive reasonably well without 'snowballing' or 'forcing'.  Technically, I am 'forcing' my way through, but it doesn't feel like it.

    • Are your master keeping all scrolls of upgrade, to upgrade a future good weapon? Or you hope you will find a natural good weapon later? Anyway, it sounds pretty good!

    • Hi Choula, I have one upgrade scroll up my sleeve, but I have sunk all upgrade scrolls into +4 Ring of Shadows and +5 Ring of Evasion. I suppose I like to play 'in character' as much as possible and so actually make a really good sneaky Rogue who blends in with all the shadows and can walk through crowded rooms of monsters without being noticed... mind you, sometimes you got to fight your way out! Currently I have a +2 Spear, but have an unidentified battle axe, with no Id scrolls or Remove Curse Scrolls so it's been sitting there for a couple of levels...

Getting CLOSER!!! On level 9 I successfully dropped a wand of Blink from Slave to Master, so now have 9 wands identified by level 9!!!! This guy better not die!!

I won't be the first to finish this Badge... but I'm aiming to do it in the least number of levels... however... it is pure luck!

WELL DONE! Now there are... 3 of us? By level 14 if firkin good! this man has the luck of a purple unicorn! :P I agree, not impossible but not terribly easy!

    • This is very encouraging. I think I might actually try both badges this weekend. I'm not certain I understand the use of Ankhs, can I get a simplified breakdown of what I need to do?

        Loading editor
    • Mate, if you can do this in a weekend you're a legend. This achievement has taken me a couple of months!

To do this quest, you need to find and identify all wands in a single run. Highly improbable!

However, if you use two characters, one as the 'Master', the other as the 'Slave' and using the 'Hero Remains' technique you can greatly boost your chances. When your slave dies, it drops one of the 4 equipped items (slot 1 = weapon/equipped wand; slot 2 = armour; slot 3 = ring; slot 4 = ring) on the level they died at which can be found by the next game (master) you play.

      So here's what you do:

      1. Start with a Master - pick whichever character (not Mage) you are best at. Don't go past Depth 1. Keep replaying the game until you have found 1 wand. Stop there and DO NOT DESCEND. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $200!

      2. Start your Slave. Chose another character. It must be a Mage Class! as Mages are the only ones capable of equipping wands and therefore the only ones who can pass on wands through hero remains. (They start with a wand and identify wands, which is handy because it means that when you find a Well of Transmutation early on, you already have a wand to toss in.) As soon as you have a wand (that your Master doesn't have) go to the depth below your Master and die (WITH THE WAND EQUIPPED!!)

      3. Return to the game with your Master. Descend to next Depth. Your Master now has a 1/4 chance of finding that wand on the next Depth via the hero remains of your dead slave. Clear the depth. DO NOT DESCEND. If you have the luck of a purple polka-dotted unicorn, like I did, then after 2 Depths you will have 2 Wands. (In fact, because this Badge is twice as hard as collecting all the rings - if your Master hasn't got 2 wands by depth 2... I'd start again....)

      4. Start a new slave and die on Master Depth +1, with an equipped wand.

      5. Repeat steps 3 + 4 till you get the Badge.... or run out of Depths ... lol

      6. Add in 4 extra chances using ANKHS. Choula's comment above is a good summary of using Ankhs to improve your chances. This takes advantage of the fact that you can use an Ankh on a Boss level to reset that level (For Depths 10, 15, 20 + 25). In doing my accomplishment above, I tried this once on depth 10 but both goes failed to materialise a wand... which means my run above has got to be one of the luckiest runs in Pixel Dungeon history. As CJTC says.... The luck of a Purple Unicorn!

May you have even greater luck!!

      regards,

      BondiBulldog

    • I fully understand how hero remains work, and everything you explained makes sense. I specifically need instructions on how to use the ankhs in unison with hero remains. Do I drop my items on the floor above the boss, die, then go through again? I just don't know the steps I need to take in order to not lose all my items. And I was just talking about starting this weekend, I plan on putting in days upon days for these badges. I'm so close to being done with this game, I'm anxious to move on to Shattered PD. Thanks for your help and support, guys. This community is so helpful.

    • Yes, you drop your stuff on the floor above and die on the boss depth. Then you go back up and pick your stuff up and battle the boss again.

Only if a slave died at the boss’s floor, thus his remains will appear as soon as the master dies and resurrects there.

    • I did it!

Great thing to do if you really like PD.

I do have to say the All Rings is considerably easier then the All Wands (Harry Potter Quest ?).

With the All Rings it was pretty much 1st try. After i had killed the goo with my assassin i started to bring in the slaves from depth 6 all the way to 23. no ankh rerolls needed. I did manage to get a Ring of Haste in the first 4 depths where i spent all my scrolls of upgrades on. in the end my ring master was pretty insane +12 Warhammer (50 dam), +12 Platearmor (70 def), +14 Ring of Haste and last but not least +11 Ring of Evasion !!!. The 50% Chance on Heroine Remains makes this quest quite enjoyable eventhough in the end it got quite hard to get 2 needed rings for your slaves i did use slaves for my slaves just to get 2 rings on my main slave.

The All Wands was a different story, know when to give up! (Take that advice from above) its better to spend time to get a good master (4 wands @ goo is a good start). The 25% Chance can be really frustrating, really frustrating. Also keep in mind you wont be slaving any weapons (besides wands) to your master. Try to leave a decent armor or ring on your slave when you sacrifice him so you wont be that much dissapointed if you dont get the wand from the pile of bones but something more usefull than gold. Its rather easy to get the needed wands for your slaves especially with the old wandmaker and his cathegorization in nonbattle and battle wands. I did manage to get all nonbattle wands first. Its quite easy to get a slave with a wand of firebolt, lightning or disintegration deep down - so save those for last. I did finish at depth 21 +2 Ankh rerolls. After i bought my 4th Ankh i went back up to depth 5 for the Ankh rerolls because slaving in demon halls takes forever. Only Wand of Firebolt (the ultimate wand) and Magic Missle missing but you only need 11 Wands for the badge.

To everyone who hasnt done this, i can really recomend those quests if you love this game, it'll take a lot of time but its fun.

Big thanks to CJTC for pointing out those quests.

How did you get so many scrolls of upgrade???? Or did you get them from heros remains?

    • I did find a +2 Ring of Haste within the first four depths and put all the Scrolls of Upgrades (12) which i found on my Master into that Ring. The Plate Armor, War Hammer and Ring of Evasion were from Heroine Remains. I managed to get some other nice stuff aswell +9 Longsword, +8 Plate Armor and some other. As cool as those items would be on any normal run, when you try to get all the rings or wands these heroine remain drops are kind of dissapointing.

    • Got it!!! It took a long time, anyway it's done. Maybe i'm the first french guy to achieve it? Anyway, it was a good quest. Three badges are missing now : 2000 games, but with 1012 it's not that bad; rare monsters...? I killed all of them for sure but not in the same run. Does it need to be the same type of hero? Don't know, i'll try again; And the challenge is going to be my last quest.

Thanks for the tips and support!

I honestly don't know if it needs to be in the one run, I don't thiiiiink so? But I could be wrong. I don't remember killing everything in one go, but I might have and just not realised.. Real helpful ey..

    • Hey folks, new to the game and the thread.

After beating the game a couple times I decided to go all in for the hardest achievement (all wands). I started out strong with 7 wands identified by level 9, but have had total crap luck since with both the Wandmaker and a gold-key chest giving me ones I already had. Rolling with Magic Missile, teleport, poison, firebolt, Amok, Avalanche at depth 14

While the run is going south on me I have learned a good wand combination that I wanted to throw out there. After all, since the focus of your Main IS wands you might as well find synergies. My favorite trick thus far has been a +3-5 Teleport with a +7-9 Poison. It got me through depths 6-10 with hardly any melee needed, which was nice since I haven't had luck with strong weapons (still sitting in a stock blazing mace). All you really have to do is zap the enemy with the poison, then teleport him off to a random place in the level and go about your merry business. Some 5-7 steps later you'll see a green "+9 EXP" pop over your head and you'll be less one mobber.

Beyond that... Getting a bit worried about this run, I'll keep you posted

      Suicide (that's my handle, ironically)

        Loading editor
    • CJTC here :) I have a tute on the rings and wands achievements if you're keen :) Basically you need to use suicides and hero remains. But 7 wands raw is an awesome run!

        Loading editor
    • Definitely keen for tutes! I've been utilizing the Hero's remains trick, which is what got me 5 of my 7 wands, but got all the way to depth 19ish by today with nothing but very dissapointing armors, rings, and coins coming out of my remains. Also tried the Ahnk trick on DM-300 for a reroll. It did NOT work.... As in upon respawning a second remains was not there. This may be because I didn't actually leave the room and spawn DM-300... Or possibly the bug was fixed in an update?

    • Howdy, it's me again. I've got a solid run going with 5 wands ID'd by level 7. I noticed that when you completed this badge the Telekenisis wand was still in the game, but has since been removed. Does this mean that I only need to ID 10?

        Loading editor
    • The Wand of Telekinesis wasn't removed; it was replaced by the Wand of Reach. There are 13 wands in total in the game, but you don't need to identify the Wand of Magic Missile. Out of the 12 wands, you only need to identify 11 of them because the 12th will be automatically identified from process of elimination.

Why didn't you sing in? Did you forget your password or something?

    • Ok that sounds good. I read that if you get unnecessary wands/rings (wand of magic missile/Ring of Haggler or Thorns) then, while they aren't needed for the achievement, they reduce your overall count.

For example... Right now I have all wands identified aside from three: Disintegration, Avalanche, and Slowness. Ideally I would need to identify two more wands to complete the challenge... HOWEVER... I have identified the wand of Magic Missile. Does Magic Missile account for one of the missing wands? meaning that of the three wands I only need to identify one more in order to succeed in the ID all wands challenge?

Hope so! I'm on depth 13 with 10 wands identified. Perhaps I can tie the record of completing it all by depth 14? :)

        Loading editor
    • Update: was able to acquire the wand of disintegration at depth 16 -- still no achievement. This means that magic missile plays no role in lowering the count. With that said... ONE WAND TO GOOOOOO! Slowness or Avalanche.

Yep. It's already identified and has a unique wand for it.

    • Most excellent! A few slaves later I was able to finally get my last wand (Avalanche). Got it on depth 18; had I known that magic missile wasn't needed I would have probably been able to finish by depth 13 or 14, due to the extraordinary luck I had in finding a wand spawn every 2-3 depths. Woohoo!

    • Getting all wands and all rings identified in a single run seems highly improbable. I assume a mod? What was your strategy for accomplishing this?

        Loading editor
    • well, i noticed that if you die in the bridges that connect the rooms in a level of "chasms and bridges", the hero remains not appear in the next game.

      maybe anyone can confirm this?

        Loading editor
    • I understand your doubt but i must say that in first place that combo took me about a whole month, playing hours per day,i did not said it was easy i said it was possible, and about the strategy,i just had slaves for slaves,i had my main(warrior) the warrior's slave(mage) and the mages's slave(rogue) i transmutated the wands until i got one of the missing ones, then i slaved the rogue until i got two of the rings that missed for the warrior, and gave one of them to the mage, then repeating the process endlessly times,i got it at last, but basically,it's the same cjtr made, just made for longer,if you have love in your life,i would suggest against trying it anyways, cuz i failed so many times i almos gave up,many times, regardless,if you want to try it,good luck, you'll need it

    • Trying to do this badge. Either something is seriously wrong with my luck, or the game was changed in the last update (I play 1.9.2a) to make this exploit hard/impossible. At this point I had about 10 slave mages who got their hands on any wand except the one they start with and went back to level 1 to suicide themselves. Then I start the game with my rogue main, and I STILL never got any wand on hero's remains. I always get the most useless drops instead. Gold in about half the cases, armor for 2-3 times, and a ring for a couple of times (Ring of Shadows and Ring of Haggler - both being pretty useless for even the rings badge, let alone the wands badge). My slaves just never get their weapon slot chosen...

        Loading editor
    • Update (the post above is mine): welp, seems like it is possible after all. On approximately 15-th attempt I succeeded in transferring a wand of lightning, and now I can finally start my main for real, rather than keeping suiciding everyone. But my bad luck is not gone apparently. First I was so irritated by my bad luck (as I couldn't blame the game anymore when I finally succeeded in transferring at least 1 wand), and irritated even further that this transferred wand ran out of charges just when I needed to deal with wraiths, forcing me to flee them, that I forgot that I'm not supposed to go to the second floor until suiciding my next slave, and went there to flee the wraiths to deal with them later. One opportunity to transfer something useful wasted. And what is even worse, I explored the entire second floor, and went back to the first floor to gather dew, killing wraiths manually and picking up abandoned loot in the process, and even after that my wand STILL remained completely empty since the time I exhausted it. At first I thought that I just played by battlemages for too long and need more patience, but now it's apparent that it really isn't recharging, which is either because it's cursed, or a major bug... I guess I'll try to upgrade it and see how it behaves after that.

    • I did it! All rings, all wands! Super badge. Got my last wand from a treasure box on level 22. Didn't know about the ankh trick. Used a gladiator as the master, nice to have that extra strength for the first tew levels. Would have been easier on earlier version without degradation. Slows down the many deep slave runs.

CJTC here again. What Saiyan said. The Master is which ever character you want to try complete the quest with, the slaves are other characters that you use to complete runs and then suicide lower than the Master depth.
