    Depth 1

    Main article: Depth 1

    NOTE:
    Tome of Mastery

If this is not your first play-through & have already acquired the Tome of Mastery for the class you're playing, you will find the Tome of Mastery in the Hero/ine's Backpack, in subsequent play-throughs.
If you wish to select a sub-class right away, be sure you find a safe place to read the Tome, as it takes 10 turns to read (unless you've already found & equipped an upgraded Ring of Haste), so that your Hero/ine doesn't get attacked & slain by multiple Marsupial Rats (or enemies in general, if read at a different depth).

    • If the dungeon generates one at Depth 1, a generally safe place to read the Mastery Tome is inside a Garden.
    • The safest place would be at cleared Boss Depths.
    • Depth 21 & Depth 26 are also among the safest depths (though it might be too late to do so by then).

    Enemy Spawn Probability:
Marsupial Rat gif Albino Rat gif

    Marsupial rat
    1
    100 %

Only Marsupial Rats spawn at this depth, with a 1/30th probability of spawning a mutated Albino Rat.
Be vigilant when encountering/fighting Albino Rats, as they have a 50% chance to inflict Bleeding Bleeding (a strong Damage-Over-Time debuff).

    Identifying Potions:

    Main article: Potion

In order to increase your chances of survival, your potions must be identified immediately.
But before you do so, make sure the depth has been fully mapped-out/explored, in case there are any Special Rooms that require a particular potion to access the item contained inside.
Be sure you're in a (relatively) safe room (& standing on a water) once you're ready to identify a potion.

    Dew Vial:

    Main article: Dew Vial Tips

    Dew vial full

This is one of the three depths that the Dew Vial can spawn in; it can spawn in Depths 1-3, and has a 1/3 chance of spawning at any of these three depths.

If you encounter a Vegetation Depth, where there's a significantly greater amount of dense vegetation/tall grass, that depth would be the perfect opportunity to fill up your Dew Vial.

    Leveling up:

    Main article: Level

It is highly advised to be the same level as the next depth, before descending to it (e.g. Be Level 2 before descending to Depth 2).  To level up before descending to Depth 2, simply slay 10 rats.

Once you've cleared the first depth of its items & have leveled up to Level 2, proceed to Depth 2.

    Depth 2

    Main article: Depth 2

This depth introduces hidden doors & hidden traps.
You'll need to start using the Search button from here on out, if you wish to avoid stepping on any hidden traps & if you wish to find any hidden doors, to fully explore the depth.

Also remember that if the Dew Vial did not spawn at Depth 1 in your particular run, it has a 1/3 chance of spawning at this depth as well.

If you don't get a good one from the Sad Ghost, you'll need to trade up to a better armor by the end of this depth - at least a high-leveled Leather armor you find from the dungeon, then a +2 Mail Armor you find from the dungeon, by the time you reach Goo.  Alternatively, you can forego upgrading your armor altogether if you find a Ring of Evasion & wish to upgrade that instead.

There's a 1/30th probability of a mutated Albino Rat spawning.

This depth introduces the Gnoll Scout. They appear at Depths 2-4 & Depth 8.
Slaying them provides 2 XP & they have a 50% chance of dropping gold.

    Farming Gold:

    Main article: Gold Tips

Gnoll Scouts are the first enemy type you'll encounter that you can loot gold from.
If you happen to chance on a run with good starting equipment & a decent amount of healing items, you may wish to opt to farm some gold early from the Gnoll Scouts, so that you can better afford the items that will be sold in the Depth 6 Shop at the next stage, especially your first item Bag - the Seed Pouch Seed Pouch.

    Sad Ghost Quest:

    Main article: Sad Ghost

    Sad ghost gif

This is one of the three depths that the Sad Ghost can spawn in; it can spawn in Depths 2-4, and has a 1/3 chance of spawning at any of these three depths.

Once you've obtained either quest item & given it to the Sad Ghost, the Sad Ghost will present you with a reward, of either the Ghost's Weapon, or the Ghost's Armor.
Choosing is pretty reactive to your current equipment, but it is generally recommended to choose the Ghost's Armor, especially to help your Hero/ine endure the upcoming first Boss Fight.
If you've picked up a decent enough weapon to aid you through the Sewers & the Boss Fight, but have weak armor, choose the Ghost's Armor.
If you've picked up a strong enough armor to aid you through the Sewers & the Boss Fight, but have a weak weapon, choose the Ghost's Weapon.

    Main article: Dried Rose Quest

    Dried rose

In order to obtain the Dried Rose for the Sad Ghost, the Hero/ine must slay 8 enemies at most, at the same depth.
[The drop chance is 1/(8-n), where n is the amount of enemies slain since speaking with the Sad Ghost.]

    Main article: Fetid Rat Quest

    Giant Rat Skull

The Hero/ine must slay the Fetid Rat in order to obtain its Giant Rat Skull, to give to the Sad Ghost as proof of having slain the Fetid Rat.

The Hero/ine must vanquish the Curse Personification, in order to complete the side-quest & be rewarded by the Sad Ghost.

    Leveling up:

    Main article: Level

To level up before descending to Depth 3, slay 7 Gnoll Scouts & 1 Marsupial Rat.
(Or any permutation that gives you 15 XP.  e.g. 6 Gnoll Scouts & 3 Marsupial Rats, 5 Gnoll Scouts & 5 Marsupial Rats, et c.)

Once you've cleared this depth of its items & have leveled up to Level 3, proceed to Depth 3.

    Depth 3

    Main article: Depth 3

Remember that if the Dew Vial did not spawn at either Depth 1, or 2, in your particular run, it has a 1/3 chance of spawning at this depth too.

Also remember that if the Sad Ghost did not spawn at Depth 2 in your particular run, it has a 1/3 chance of spawning at this depth as well.
If you've already found & drank two Potions of Strength from Depths 1 & 2, then receiving the reward from the Sad Ghost at this depth will be much more beneficial, as there's a greater chance you'll receive a higher upgrade value, due to the item generation calculating for your Hero/ine's current Strength level.

If you don't get a good weapon from the Sad Ghost, you'll need to trade up to a Quarterstaff (average damage) by the time you reach this depth; and it needs to be +1, or +2, by the time you reach Goo.  (At the very least, a +1, or +2, Knuckleduster; above average, a +2 Mace)

    Main article: Sewer Crab Tips

This depth introduces the Sewer Crab. They appear at Depths 3 & 4.
Slaying them provides 3 XP & they have a 1/6 chance of dropping Mystery meat Mystery Meat.
It's highly recommended to freeze your Mystery Meat, instead of cooking them, as freezing them, to turn them into Frozen carpaccio Frozen Carpaccio, gives them beneficial buffs; while cooking them, to turn them into Chargrilled meat Chargrilled Meat, only removes the harmful effects to make it safe to eat, and doesn't give it any beneficial buffs.

    Farming Gold:

    Main article: Gold Tips

If you're strong/resilient enough, or have enough healing resources, remember that you can farm gold from Gnoll Scouts.
This may help in purchasing most of the (needed) items from the Depth 6 Shop.

If you're unable to effectively farm Gnoll Scouts, fret not; you can revisit the Depth 6 Shop for any items you were unable to purchase the first time, after you've farmed more gold from Gnoll Brutes in the Mining Caves stage.

    Leveling up:

    Main article: Level

To level up before descending to Depth 4, slay 6 Sewer Crabs & 1 Gnoll Scout/2 Marsupial Rats.
(Or any permutation that gives you 20 XP.  e.g.  5 Sewer Crabs & 5 Marsupial Rats/2 Gnoll Scouts & 1 Marsupial Rat, 4 Sewer Crabs & 4 Gnoll Scouts, et c.)

Once you've cleared this depth of its items & have leveled up to Level 4, proceed to Depth 4.

    Depth 4

    Main article: Depth 4

Remember that if the Sad Ghost did not spawn at Depth 3 in your particular run, it has a 1/3 chance of spawning at this depth too.
If you've already found & drank two Potions of Strength from Depths 1-3, then receiving the reward from the Sad Ghost at this depth will be even more beneficial, as there's a greater chance you'll receive a much higher upgrade value, due to the item generation calculating for your Hero/ine's current Strength level.

Remember to convert any obtained Mystery Meat into Frozen Carpaccio, instead of Chargrilled Meat, when possible.

    Farming Gold:

    Main article: Gold Tips

Again, if you intend to clear out the Depth 6 Shop of its items, remember to farm Gnoll Scouts for gold at this depth.

    Leveling up:

    Main article: Level

To level up before descending to Depth 5, slay 8 Sewer Crabs & 1 Marsupial Rat.
    (Or any permutation that gives you 25 XP.  e.g.  7 Sewer Crabs & 2 Gnoll Scouts/1 Gnoll Scout & 2 Marsupial Rats/4 Marsupial Rats, or 6 Sewer Crabs & 3 Gnoll Scouts/2 Gnoll Scouts & 3 Marsupial Rats/7 Marsupial Rats, et c.)

Once you've cleared this depth of its items & have leveled up to Level 5, proceed to Depth 5.

    Identifying Potions & Scrolls:

    Main article: Potion

If you still have non-identified potions at this point, now would be the best time to identify them, before descending to Depth 5 & fighting Goo. You might need the non-identified potion(s) for the boss fight.

    Main article: Scroll

Once you've cleared this depth of its enemies & items, you've leveled-up, and are ready to descend, this would be one of the two best times to identify any non-identified scrolls.

As previously mentioned, this is to avoid accidentally reading a Scroll of Challenge at Depth 5, waking Goo up & revealing your location to Goo, before you're even ready to fight it (unless Kiting is part of your particular boss fight strategy & you're already ready to fight).

Any remaining helpful scrolls you have that have become identified can then be used in the fight against Goo.

This is also to avoid prematurely reading it at the next stage/Depth 6, eliminating your chance to clear Depth 6 via stealth.

[Pre-1.7.4 - NOTE:  At most, you can receive 3 Upgrade scrolls from this stage.  Keep this in mind when identifying your scrolls.]

    Depth 5

    Main article: Depth 5

Make sure that you're at least Level 5 before you descend to this depth.

Once you descend here, sweep the place for any hidden traps.

Once you reach Goo's door, take a moment to review the items in your Backpack, before initiating the boss fight with Goo.

[WARNING:  The stairs that brought you down to this depth will disappear once Goo wakes up & sees you; be sure you're absolutely ready to fight before you wake Goo up, as there'll be no retreating once Goo wakes up & sees you.]

    SEE:  Goo Boss Guide

    Classes & Sub-Classes:

    • Warrior
Fighting Goo as the Warrior is pretty straight-up, as you'll have to brute force + tank your way to defeating it.  Follow the Melee Method that's explained in the Goo Boss Guide, so that you can effectively defeat it & come out relatively unscathed.
      • Berserker
Fighting Goo as a Berserker-Warrior will be even easier, especially if Goo manages to lower your health to, or below, 40%, since it will trigger your increased damage perk, which will expedite the fight.
    • Rogue
Fighting Goo as the Rogue will take a little more finesse after your first strike on Goo at the door, but should be a bit easier overall, especially if your armor is considerably lighter/stronger; light/strong enough, so that you're able to dodge many of Goo's attacks.  Follow the Melee Method that's explained in the Goo Boss Guide, so that you can effectively defeat it & come out relatively unscathed.
      • Assassin
Fighting Goo as an Assassin-Rogue will only be slightly easier on your first strike on Goo at the door, unless you keep kiting him through the doors for the damage amp.  But if you have plenty of Lullaby scrolls, a Paralyzed-inflicting item, or a Bounce-inscribed armor, then you'll be able to take full advantage of your damage amp on Goo.
    • Mage
Fighting Goo as the Mage will be measurably more difficult than the previous two classes, especially if you don't have the necessary items in order to defeat it.  But if you do, it should be markedly easy.  Follow the Ranged Method that's explained in the Goo Boss Guide, so that you can effectively defeat it & come out relatively unscathed.
      • Warlock
Fighting Goo as a Warlock-Mage will likely be the most difficult of the sub-classes, and the only time it'll be especially difficult for the Warlock (fighting solo bosses), since he can't take advantage of his perks.  He'll also have to be very reliant on the items you've managed to accumulate for this fight.
    • Huntress
Fighting Goo as the Huntress will also be considerably difficult, depending on which route you've chosen to take (Ranged, or Melee).  You'll be significantly item-dependent with her.  Follow the Ranged (or Melee) Method that's explained in the Goo Boss Guide, so that you can effectively defeat it & come out relatively unscathed.
      • Warden
Fighting Goo as a Warden-Huntress will actually be the easiest of the sub-classes, due to her tanky perk.  Remember to take full advantage of this.  She'll be as straightforward as the Warrior, especially if taking the Melee route.

    Rat King

Before you leave Depth 5, search for the door to the Rat King's room, along the walls in Goo's room.
This harmless, sleeping NPC will have treasure chests you can raid (w|o consequence), lining the walls of its room.
The Rat King can be found immediately via Potion of Mind Vision.
It doesn't wake up 'til you tap it.

    Treasure Chests:
Details regarding the item generation probability of each chest can be found there:  Prize Generation

    Leveling up:

    Main article: Level

To level up before descending to Depth 6, ascend back up to Depth 4 & slay 10 Sewer Crabs.
(Or any permutation that gives you 30 XP.  e.g.  9 Sewer Crabs & 3 Marsupial Rats/1 Gnoll Scout, & 1 Marsupial Rat, or 8 Sewer Crabs & 3 Gnoll Scouts, et c.)

This will make exploring Depth 6 slightly easier (particularly on your healing resources) as well, once you descend to it.
If you're low on healing resources after the boss fight, you can always return to Depth 4 to level up further, after you've purchased Potions of Healing at Depth 6.
Though, in those cases, you might be better off simply spending extra time at Depth 6, in order to reach Level 7, before descending to Depth 7.  (Unless you left an item at a previous depth in the Sewer stage, or wish to return to a room you didn't get around to exploring/using.)
Each case/unique run must be assessed as such individually, so it's ultimately your call on how comfortable you are with proceeding/descending to the next stage.

    Identifying Potions & Scrolls:

    Main article: Potion

If you've managed to beat Goo with a stash of non-identified potions (because you wanted to save gold on buying the potions from the Depth 6 Shop), go ahead & descend to Depth 6 to buy the potions from the Shop, before returning to Depth 5 to safely identify them.

Although it's technically possible, it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to reach the next Shop(s) without having identified your Potions of Healing (to save gold).  Doing so will only make things more unnecessarily difficult for you, so don't bother, unless you prefer the challenge.

    Main article: Scroll

Once you've defeated Goo, this is one of the two (if not the) best time(s) to identify any remaining non-identified scrolls, especially if the Scroll of Challenge hasn't yet been identified, as Depth 5's the only depth that'll be empty (after defeating Goo) & safe to read a Scroll of Challenge, this early in the dungeon (to avoid alerting every enemy at Depth 6); as well as if you intended to save gold on buying the scrolls from the Depth 6 Shop.  If that's the case, go ahead & descend to Depth 6 to buy the scrolls from the Shop, before ascending back up to Depth 5 to identify them.

[Pre-1.7.4 - NOTE:  At most, you can receive 3 Upgrade scrolls from this stage.  Keep this in mind when identifying your scrolls.]
